Description
PATENTED JUNE 23, 1908. T. J. TURKO;& P. J. HOLMAN.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 2a, 1908.
FIG. 2
THE uomus PETERS co., wasmucru/v, o. c
, thereof.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
4 THOMAS J. TURKO AND PAUL ll. HOLMAN, OF CARNEGIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 23, 1908.
Application filed. March 23, 1908. Serial No. 422,786.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS J. TURKO and PAUL J. HOLMAN, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Carnegie, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a wrench, and the objects of our invention are, first, to provide a Wrench that can be easily and quickly adjusted; second, to obviate the necessity of using screw threads and a nut as an adjusting medium for a wrench and third, to provide a strong and durable wrench.
We attain the above objects by a wrench that will be presently described in detail and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with our invention, Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the adjustable aw thereof in section, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of our wrench taken on the line xx of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a rear end view of the adjustable jaw of the wrench.
In the accompanying drawmgs, 1 designates a shank rectangular in cross section, and provided with teeth 2 upon the rear edge This shank is provided with a fixed jaw 3, and a detachable handle 4.
Slidably mounted upon the shank 1 is an adjustable jaw 5 having a vertical opening 6 for the shank 1. One side of the jaw 5 is provided with an enlargement 7, and the rear sides of said jaw and said enlargement are provided with a transverse slot 8 communicating with the opening 6 of the jaw 5. The rear side of the enlargement 7 is also cut away, as at 9, at the upper and lower edges of the slot 8. In this slot 8 is arranged a gripping bar 10 having teeth 11 for engaging the teeth 2 of the shank 1, and projections 12 fitting in the cut away portions of the enlargement 7.
The gripping bar 10 is provided with a fixed pin 13 extending through the bore 14 provided therefor in the enlargement 7. The pin 13 is provided .with a head 15 and with a collar 16, and interposed between the collar 16 and the inner endlof the bore 14 is a coil spring 17, said coil spring surrounding the pin 13 and normally holding the toothed bar in the slot 8.
When the headed end of the pin 13 is pressed upon, said gripping bar 10 is moved out of engagement with the toothed shank 1, and the jaw 5 can be easily adjusted upon the shank 1. When the pin 13 is released, the coil spring 17 which has been under tension, returns the gripping bar 10 to its normal position in engagement with the shank 1.
o believe that the construction of our Wrench will be fully understood from the foregoing description, and we reserve the right to make any changes in the size, proportion and minor details thereof as are permissible by the appended claims.
Having now described our invention what we claim as new, is
1. In a wrench, the combination with a toothed shank having a fixed jaw and a de tachable handle, of an adjustable jaw slidably mounted upon said shank, an enlargement carried by one side of said jaw, said enlargement and said jaw having a slot formed therein, a gripping bar movably mounted in said slot and having teeth for engaging said toothed shank, said enlargement having a bore formed therein, a pin carried by said gripping bar and extending through said bore, a head carried by said pin, a collar arranged upon said pin, and a coil spring interposed between said collar and'the inner end of said bore for normally maintaining said bar in engagement with said shank.
2. In a wrench, the combination with a toothed shank having a fixed jaw and a detachable handle, of an adjustable aw slidably mounted upon said shank, an enlargement carried by one side of said jaw, said enlargement and said jaw having a slot formed therein, a gripping bar movably mounted in said slot and having teeth for engaging said toothed shank, said enlargement havinga bore formed therein, a pin carried by said gripping bar and extending through said bore, a head carried by said pin, a collar arranged upon said pin, and means arranged in said bore for engaging said collar and retaining said bar in engagement with said shank.
3. In a wrench, the combination with a toothed shank having a fixed aw and a detachable handle, of an adjustable aw slidably mounted upon said shank, an enlargement carried by one side of said jaw, said enlargement and said jaw having a slot formed bore formed therein, a pin carried by said therein, a gripping bar movably mounted in I In testimony whereof We affix our signa said slot and having teeth for engaging said tures in the presence of two Witnesses. toothed shank, said enlargement having a I THOMAS TURKQ PAUL J.
