Description
PATENTED APR. 30, 1907.
G. A. MEYERS, JR. SELF ADJUSTING WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 6. 1906.
Wig:
GUSTAV A. MEYERS, JR, or JEANNETTE, PENNSYLVANIA.
SELF-ADJUSTING WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application filed June 6, 1906. Serial No. 320,482-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV A. MnYnRs,
Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Jeannette, in the county of W'estmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Self-Adjusting Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
Y This invention relates to wrenches and more particularly to self adjusting wrenches, the object being to provide a wrench which will adjust itself to fit any size nut.
Another object of my invention is to provide a wrench so constructed that the nut will be securely clamped between the jaws as long as any pressure is put on the handle.
With these objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings specification :Figure 1 view of my improved wrench. enlarged view partly in section. Fig. 3 is a section taken on lines 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the sliding jaw dctached. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the pivoted jaw detached. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the enlarged toothed end of the handle. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the sleeve detached.
Referring to the drawing A, indicates a sleeve or casing, the side walls of which are provided with notches A, at one end, in which the grooved head of the jaw B, is adapted to fit, which is provided with a toothed shank B, having an apertured end which is mounted on a pin A forming a part of this is a perspective Fig. 2 is an secured between the .walls of the casing adjacent the other end. A grooved jaw C, is slidably mounted in the casing on the jaw B, pro vided with a toothed shank C, the end of which extends out through the end of the casing so that the jaw can be easily shoved forward with the thumb. Loosely arranged in the casing between the toothed shanks, is the enlarged tooth portion D, of the handle D, which meshes with said shank and by means of which the jaw B, can be moved in and out of the casing as desired. A coilspring E, is mounted on a pin arranged between the side walls of the casing, one end of which bears against the inner face of the jaw, and the other end of the spring fits into a recess formed in the shank C, of the jaw, adapted to draw the jaws together.
From the "foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a very novel device which can be easily and quickly placed on a nut and one which will securely clamp itself thereon, when being used.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1- 1. In a wrench oi the kind described, the combination with a casing, 01' a jaw pivoted in the casing, a jaw slidably mounted in said casing and a handle arranged in said casing between said jaws for the purpose described.
2. In a wrench oi the kind described, the combination with a casing provided with a pivoted jaw having a toothed. shank, of a jaw slidably mounted in said casing provided with a toothed shank and a handle provided with a tooked end arranged in said casing meshing with said shanks, for the purpose described.
3. In a wrench of the kind described, the combination with a casing having a notched end, of a jaw adapted to fit in said notches provided with a toothed shank pivoted in said casing, a jaw provided with a toothed shank slidably mounted in said casing on the pivoted jaw, and a handle provided with a toothed enlargement arranged between said shanks in said casing, for the purpose described.
4. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a casing having a notched end, of a jaw adapted to it in said notches provided with a toothed shank pivoted in said casing, a jaw provided with a toothed shank, slidably mounted in said casing, a coil-spring arranged on a pin between said shank one end of which engages the pivoted head and the other fits in a recess formed in the shank of the sliding aw, and a handle having a toothed end arranged in said casing meshing with said shanks, -for the purpose described.
