To all whom it maycmcern! L Be it known that 1, JOHN C. INGRAM, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident, of Cameron, county of Marshall, and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates broadly to a combination tool, and more particularly to a tool of the wrench type.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a tool having a fixed jaw and a movable jaw, the latter being'provided with a pivoted arm by means of which a powerful gripping force may be exerted upon the object engaged by said jaws.

A further object of the device is to provide means whereby said movable jaw may be locked from movement away from the stationary jaw. And a still further object of the invention is to provide a tool of the character mentioned the handle of which is adapted to be used as a hammer.

With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the features of construction, arrangement of parts, and combination of elements which will hereinafter be fully described, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side elevation of my invention; and Fig. 2 is an under-side view of the same.

Referring to said drawings, 1 indicates a fixed jaw having a shank 2 of a peculiar novel form formed integral therewith, the opposite end of said shank being disposed at substantially a right angle to the body there of and being enlarged or thickened to provide a handle portion 3 which may be used as a hammer. Pivoted to the shank 2 slightly in the rear of said jaw 1, is the shank 4 of a relatively movable jaw 5. Pivotally connected to the rear end of said shank 4 is the end of an arm 6 which has formed on its free end a plurality of alined rings 7 adapted to be engaged by the fingers of the hand which holds the handle 3. The arm 6 may have notches 8 formed on either or both sides thereof, said notches being adapted to receive the adjacent parallel portions of a substantially U-shaped guide or keeper 9 through which said arm 6 extends,

the parallel portions of said keeper being rlgldly attached to the shank 2.

As 18 obvious, when an object is to be engaged by the jaws of my tool, said jaws are separated by thrusting the arm 6 forward, causing the movable parts to assume substantially thepositions shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. WVhen the object to be engaged is disposed between the jaws, the arm 6 is drawn rearward to cause the jaws to grip said object, whereupon the latter may be rotated as by a wrench of any ordinary type.

The opposing jaws may be made in any of numerous widely varying forms, adapting the device for a variety of uses.

The shank 2 has an angular or downwardly bowed form at a point slightly in the rear of the pivotal connection of the shank 4 therewith, the latter being disposed across said shank 2. And, since the arm 6 recrosses said shank 2, it will be seen that the device is substantially of lazy-tongs shape. This form of the device, coupled with the arrangement of the gripping rings 7 closely adjacent to the handle 3 provides not only means whereby a powerful gripping force may be applied to an object interposed between the jaws, but also whereby entrance may be had to close places, or places which are difficult of access with tools of ordinary types.

What is claimed is 1. A tool of the character described comprising a shank having a fixed jaw at one end and an angularly disposed handle at the other end, said shank being downwardly bowed at the rear of said jaw, a second shank crossing and pivotally connected to the first mentioned shank at a point slightly in the rear of said jaw, a jaw carried by said second shank and adapted to cooperate with the first mentioned jaw, an arm pivotally connected to the rear end of said sec- 0nd shank and recrossing the first mentioned shank, a keeper carried by the first shank and having said arm freely movable therethrough, and gripping means carried by said arm disposed adjacent to said handle.

2. A tool of the character described comprising a shank having a fixed jaw at one end and an angularly disposed handle at the other end, said shank being downwardly bowed at the rear of said jaw, a second shank crossing and pivotally connected to the first mentioned shank at a point slightly in the rear of said jaw, a jaw carried by said second shank and adapted to 006perate with the first mentioned jaw, an arm pivotally connected to the rear end of said second shank and recrossing the first mentioned shank, a keeper carried by the first prising a shank having a fixed jaw at one end and an angularly disposed handle at the other end, said shank being downwardly bowed at the rear of said jaw, a second and having said arm freely movable-therethrough, a finger grip carried by the rear end of said arm'and closely associated with said handle, and; means for securing the movable parts in adjusted position.
