rrE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS JENsEN, or ARENDAL, NORWAY.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,825, dated March 6, 1900.
Application filed January3, 1900. Serial No. 272. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS JENSEN, a citizen of the Kingdom of Norway, and a resident of Arendal, Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongs and Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the features of structure and arrangement of tongs and wrenches hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of such a tong or wrench. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are also front views of the tool, showing the same in different positions of acting. Fig. 5 is a side view of the tool.
The tool described hereinafter is characterized thereby thatit may be used as a common tong and also as a wrench. This 'combined tong and wrench comprises the two limbs a and b with jaws cl and e. The limbs a b are operated by a lever c, pivoted to the limbs. The lever is split in its upper part, thereby engaging both limbs a b, as shown in the drawings. The lever o is pivoted to the limb b by a pin f. Another pin 9, fastened to the lever, may engage a socket h in the other limb a, Fig. 1. This limb to is, however, pro vided with another socket 'i, separated from the socket h by a projecting part It. The limbs or b are at one end connected by a pin Z, fastened to the limb a, but sliding in a groove or opening min the limb b. A spring 41, located in a hole in the limb 1), acts on the pin'l and keeps the limb a normally downward in order that the pin 9 always may be secured in one of the socketsh or t'. (See Figs. 1 and 3.)
When it is desired to have the jaws cl 6 come together when the lever c is down or in closed position, the pin 9 is held in the socket 71.. When a larger separation of the jaws is desired and it is not necessary that they come so close together when closed, as when. the device is used as a wrench, the pin g is with drawn from the socket h by moving the mem bers a b longitudinally of each other in opposite direction against the tension of the spring a. When the pin is pressed out of the socket h, it is slid into the socket g, the spring a hold ing the same in place. Thus by the pin y al ternately engaging the sockets h and 7 the stroke length of the jaws d and e may be regulated or adjusted.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. Tongs and wrenches comprising the limbs 'a and b operated by a lever c, which lever is pivoted to the one limb Z) and has a pin which alternately may engage sockets h and 1} in the other limb a substantially as described.
2. A tong and wrench comprising two jaw THOMAS JENSEN.
