Description

APPLIOATION rILBD SEPT. 5, 1911.

WILBER W. LEONARD, 0F HINCKLEY, MINNESOTA,
PIPE-WRENCH.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, VILBER IV. LEONARD, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Hinckley, in the county of Iine and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Wrenches, 0f which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe wrenches of the type generally known as alligator wrenches, and which are provided with a V-shaped recess, the walls of which are serrated, and form the jaws of the wrench, and the object of the invention is to provide means that can be readily attached to any wrench of this type for holding the pipe or rod to be turned by the wrench, in position, in engagement lwith the jaws of the wrench.
The invention consists generally in the constructions and combinations hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation of a pipe wrench embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a partial side view of the same, Fig. 3 is a view of the wrench head with the holding device in position to permit the wrench to be applied to a pipe or rod.
In the drawings, 2 represents the wrench head, 3 the shank and 4 the handle. These parts are usually made integrally and of metal, and the wrench head is provided with a V-shaped recess, the converging walls 5 and 6 of which are serrated and adapted to engage the outer surface of a pipe or rod when it is desired to turn the same by means of the wrench.
I provide on the wrench head a sliding bar 7 having an inwardly projecting eXtension or end 8, said bar being preferably provided with slots 9 and l0 engaged by rivets or lugs l1 and 12. The bar 7 is preferably outwardly inclined and the sloty 9 is parallel with the walls o f said bar, so that as said bar is slid on the wrench head it travels from the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings to the position shown in Fig. l. A suitable handle 13 is pivoted to t-he wrench handle and is provided with a rod 14 that connects it with the end of the Specification of Letters Patent.

bar 7. A spring 15 engages the handle 13 and its opposite end is secured to the shank of the wrench and said spring tends to throw out the bar 7 into the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The details of the construction may be varied in many particulars without departing from my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination, with a pipe wrench, having a V-shaped recess, the inclined walls of which are serrated and form rigid jaws, of a sliding bar arranged upon said wrench head, and means for moving said bar and causing a portion thereof to project partially across the space between said jaws.
2. The combination, with a shank having a handle at one end and a V-shaped longitudinal recess at its opposite end provided with serrated edges forming a rigid jaw, a bar slidably mounted on said shank and having a jaw arranged to project across said V-shaped recess, and means for drawing said bar jaw toward the apex of said.
recess.
3. The combination, with a pipe wrench having a V-shaped recess forming rigid jaws, of a bar having longitudinal slots therein and pins mounted on said wrench and on which said bar is slidable, said bar having an angular extension projecting partially across said recess, and means for lnoving said bar toward the apex of said recess.
4. The combination, with a pipe wrench having inclined rigid jaws, of a sliding bar arranged upon the wrench head, said bar having longitudinal slots therein, one of said slots being parallel substantially with one of said jaws, said bar having an angular projection extending partially across the space between said jaws, the outward movement of said bar causing said angular projection to be withdrawn from the space between said jaws, and means for moving said bar.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of August 1911.
VILBER IV. LEONARD.
