J. A. FAIRBANKS.
PIPE WRENCH. v I No. 340,436 PatentedApr. 20, 1886.'
. I v f l/yl WWW- 6 r 1? Nrrsn STATES J AMES A. FAIRBANKS,
PATENT Erica.
OF AUGUSTA, MAINE.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,436, dated April 20, 1886,
Application filed November 11, 1885. Serial No. 182,448. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMEs A. FAIRBANKS, of Augusta, in the county of Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented a new and use-, ful Improvement in Pipe-Wrenches, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through y y, Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a cross section through 00, Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
In Fig. 1, f is the shank, having wooden handle 0 and ferrule (Z thereon. Integral with the shankf is thejaw a.
I n is the shank, having second jaw, b, thereon. On the throat of the shank n are cut the screw-threads 1, 2, 3, 850. The bolt 0, having external threads cut thereon, is placed between the shanks f and n. The threads on the bolt 0 engage those out in the shank n. Upon one end of the bolt 0 is the milled head 1, by which it is operated. The other end rests solid against thejaw a at 4. The whole is inclosed in the case m m, (the outline shown at o 0 0 0.) The pin 8 passes through the case at and jaw a. Upon the case at is the rim 8, through which passes the screw 70 into slot 1' i, cut in the bolt 0, so as to allow a slight longitudinal motion of the bolt.
is a spiral spring rt sting in holes drilled in shank f and case 912.
In Fig. 2 the case m, shanks n and f, and bolt 0 are shown in cross-section.
To give a quick return, the bolt 0 has the threads cut off, as indicated in Fig. 2, so that when the flat surface is turned to the fiat surface of the shank n the shank will then slide freely in the case m.
My wrench operates as follows: To open or close thejaws, the bolt 0 is turned by the milled head 0, the threads on the bolt engage those out in the throat of the shank n, and the jaws a b are opened or closed, as desired. When adjusted to the pipe or rod, the handleis pressed upward, (as drawn,) the pin 8 operates as a fulcrum, the jaw a at 4 presses against the bolt 0, and as the bolt is allowed to slide in the case m, the slot i being cut as before described, this operation closes the jaws on the pipe or rod. There will also be a slight closing of the jaws due to the movement on the pin 8, before described.
The operation of a. wrench having a quick return is readily understood by reference to Fig. 2. When the bolt 0 has the threads cut off on one side, as indicated in Fig. 2, the flat surface is turned parallel with the fiat throat of the shank n. The shank can then be moved freely through the case at, and when adjusted to the pipe or rod the bolt is turned to the right, the thread thereon engages the thread in shank n, and the whole is locked and operated as before described.
I am aware that wrenches resembling this have been patented and are in use, and I wish to acknowledge the state of the art as represented thereby.
I distinguish my invention from all others, in that Iemploy a bolt with external screw thereon, which enables me to cut the screwthreads upon the throat of the shank n, and thus add to its strength and prevent injury to the threads in operating the wrench. It also enables me to make a more compact and stronger wrench; and, again, in having the jaw a at 4 operate against the head of the bolt 0, this,
ly the shank n and jaw b, in the case m, thus closing the jaws on. each other. The spiral spring is also an improvement.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a pipe-wrench, the combination, substantially as described, of the shank f, having jaw a thereon, the shank n, having jaw b thereof, and the bolt 0, with external screw thereon, all connected and inclosed by the pin 8 and case m.
2. In a pipe-wrench, the combination of the shank f, having jaw a thereon, said jaw operating against the bolt 0 at 4, as described, the shank n, with jaw 12 thereon and screwthreads cut in the throat thereof, and the bolt 0, with screw cut thereon, all inclosed and connected by pin 8 and case m, as set forth.
3. In a pipe-wrench, the combination, as described', of the shank f, having jaw a thereon, the shank n, having jaw b thereon and screw-threads cut in the throat thereof, and the it will be seen, slides the bolt, and consequenton and screw-threads cut in the throat thereboltc, with externalscrew thereon, allinclosed, shank f, having jaw 11 thereon, the shank n, connected,'and operated by case m, pin 8, and with jaw 11 thereon and screw-threads cut in spiral spring 5. the throat thereof, and the bolt 0, with exter- I5 4. In a pipe-wrench, the combination of the nal screw thereon, said bolt having slot i i cut shank f, having jaw a thereon, the shank n, therein to allow longitudinal motion thereof, with jaw b thereon and screw-threads out in all inclosed and connected by case m, pin 8, and the throat thereof, and thecbolt c, with exterscrew k, as and for the purposes set forth. na-l screw thereon, the threads on said bolt be- I ing out off on one side to give a quick return, JAMES FAIRBAL K all inclosed and connected by case m and pin Witnesses:
