STEPHEN ONDREY, OF BRADDOOK, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
LLPIJCIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 742,055, dated. October 2 1903- Application filed July 1, 1903. Serial No. 163,931. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN ONDREY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Braddock, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. 7
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches, and has for its object to provide a wrench which may be easily and quickly and effectually operated when it is desired to use the same.
Another object of my invention is the provision of novel means whereby the sliding jaw carried by the shank of the wrench may be readily locked against the same in any desired position.
A further object is to provide a wrench which will be extremely simple in construction, strong and durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efticient when used.
Briefly described, my improved wrench comprises a shank having a fixed jaw upon one end and a handle upon the other, said shank carrying a slidable jaw, in which is pivoted a cam-lever, and an engaging block, said block adapted to engage the teeth carried by the shank of the wrench and hold the jaw in a locked position. Means is provided within said jaw whereby when the cam is not in engagement with the locking-block the same will be held normally out of engagement.
In describing the invention in detail refer once is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views,in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wrench, showing the slidable jaw in section; and Fig. 2 is a front view of the wrench.
To put my invention into practice, I provide a shank 1, which carries upon its one end the stationary jaw 2 and upon its other 'end the handle 3. Upon the shank l I providethe teeth 4, and slidably mounted upon said shank is the jaw 5, which is cut away, as indicated at 6, to receive the locking-block 7, carrying teeth 8, which are adapted to engage the teeth 4, carried by the shank, when it is desiredto lock the jaw in position upon the shank. Mounted between the side walls 9 and 10 of the cut-away portion 6 is a cam 11, which is formed integral with a lever 12, said cam being pivoted between the side walls 9 and 10 by. a pin 14.. The locking-block 7 is supported within the'cut-away portion 6 by means of the pins 15, which pass through the projections 16, carried by the upper and lower walls 17 and 18, respectively, of the movable jaw 5. Secured to the outer end of the pin 15 is a washer 19, and mounted between said washer and the projection 16 is a spring 20, which is adapted to normally hold the locking-block 7 out of engagement with the teeth 4 of the shank 1, except when the cam 11 is in the position as indicated in Fig. 1, when the locking-block will be held in engagement with the teeth 4 of the shank. The slidable jaw 5 is cutaway, as indicated at 21 and 22,
raised and the locking-block 7 is disengaged from the teeth of the shank by means of the spiral springs 20, mounted upon the projections 16, carried within the cut-away portion 6 of the slidable jaw 5. It being desired to lock the jaw, the lever is depressed, whereby the jaw comes in contact with the lockingblock and depresses the same.
It will be noted that my improved wrench may be used as a Stillson wrench when it is desired, and I may employ any means for releasing the locking-block and holding the same in an unlocked position when desired.
While I have herein shown and described a practical embodiment of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
1. A wrench of the type set forth comprising a shank having teeth formed on its one side, a jaw formed-integral with said shank, a handle secured on the other end of said Having fully described my invention, what IOO shank, a jaw slidably mounted upon the a looking-block mounted within said cut-away portion, a lever mounted within said cut-away portion, a cam formed upon the one end of said lever and adapted to engage the lockingblook, projections carried within the out-away portion, pins carried by the locking-block and adapted to pass through the projections, means carried by the projections for normally holding the looking-block in a disengaged position, substantially as described.
2. A Wrench of the type set forth comprising a shank having teeth formed on its one side, a jaw formed integral with said shank, a handle secured on the other end of said shank, a jaw slidably mounted upon the shank, said jaw having its one side cut away, a locking-block mounted within said cut-away portion, alever mounted within said out-away STEVE ONDREY.
