Description

I N0. 761,383. PATBNTYED MAY 31, 1904.
N. W. KAHLE.
WRENCH.
I nrmornox rum) 52M. so. 1903.
R0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES I Patented May e1, 1904? PATENT OFFICE.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming-part of Letters Patent No. 761,383, dated May 31, 1904. Application filed September 30, 1903. Serial No. 175,191. (No model.)
To all whom it may concerm- Be it known that I, NATHANIEL W. KAHLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frampton, in the county of Clarion and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and
'- it comprises a stationary jaw with serrated shank portion and a movable jaw'having a cam-lever pivoted to the same and adapted to frictionally engage one face of the shank portion of the fixed jaw, while means is provided for holding a lug on said lever in a longitudinal groove in the shank portion, whereby the parts may be heldv securely while operating the wrench. 1
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the'letters of reference marked thereon, form apart -of this application, and in which drawings Figure l is a side elevation of my improved wrench, showing the sliding jaw locked. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the wrench and the jaws.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a fixed jaw of a wrench, having a shank portion B, with teeth or serrations C on one face thereof, and upon the rear face of the shank portion is a longitudinal groove E. One end of the fixed jaw is curved, as at A, to cooperate with a serrated jaw F upon the slidingjaw, adapting the device for use as a pipe-wrench, said jaw F being preferably dovetailed to the sliding jaw and having a slight longitudinal movement. Said sliding jaw (designated in the drawings by letter H) is chambered out to receive the shank portion of the fixed jaw and gitudinal movements through the chambered portion of the movable jaw by means of a pin 0, passed through the walls of the movable jaw,- and the inner face of said cam-lever is grooved, as at Q, transversely to receive said pin when the lever is closed, and R designates a lug upon the under face of the lever K, which lug is adapted to rest in said slotE when the lever and handle are brought together, thus securely holding the wrench from lateral strain in operation.
From the foregoing it will be observed that by the provision of a wrench embodying the features shown and described means is provided for quickly and easily adjusting the wrench without the necessity of turning screws or nuts, as the sliding jaw may be readily adjusted to any position by throwing the lever outward and pushing the sliding jaw-forward or backward upon the shank portion of the fixed jaw, and when the lever is thrown against the shank portion of the fixed jaw the jaws will be securely held in an adjusted position:
While I; have shown a particular form of construction of wrench embodying-the features of my invention, it will be understood that I may make alterations, if desired, in the detailed construction of the same without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A sliding-jaw wrench comprising a fixed jaw with a shank portion having serrations on one edge and an elongated recess in its opposite edge, 'a movable jaw chambered out and mounted upon the shank portion of the fixed jaw, serrations on the inner wall of the sliding jaw, a pin Q mounted in the walls of 5 the sliding jaw, a lever pivoted to the walls of the sliding jaw and having a cam extending beyond the inner marginal edge of the handle of said lever, and a recessed portion 0 adapted to receive said pin when the lever is thrown toward the shank portion of the fixed I jaw, and a lug R upon said lever adapted to engage said elongated recess, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
