Be it known that 1, ROBERT N.1\11I.LnR,a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches,
of which the following is a specification, refl erence being had thereinto the accompanying d raw in This invention has relation to wrenches, and more particularly to that type of wrench commonly known as a monkeyavrench; and the object of my invention is to provide a wrench of this character wherein a much liner and more accurate adjustment can be obtained than in wrenches of this type heretofore constructed.
Another object of my invention is to provide a wrench of this character wherein if it is desired to grip an object with the same the movable jaw thereof may be easily and quickly adjusted to the object, and than a more perfeet and finer adjustment may be obtained by further manipulating the movable jaw of the wrench.
\Vith the above and other objects in view reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, wherein" Figure 1 a side elevation of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a portion of the shank and fixed jaw of my improved wrench, showing the movable jaw thereof in vertical section. Fig. 3 is an edge view of my improved wrench, a portion of the shank and handle thereof being broken away. Fig. 1 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 1/ y of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line .11 .1 of Fig. 2.
Reference now being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts, it will be noted that I employ the ordinary shank 1, which is provided with teeth 2 upon its one edge, and this shank carries an integral jaw 3 upon its upper end, and a handle at is secured to the lower end of the shank by any suitable means.
The reference-numeral 5 indicates the movable jaw of my improved wrench, which is adapted to slide upon the shank 1, and it is in this movable jaw that the important features of my invention reside. The jaw is composed of two sections 6 and T, the section (3 being provided with a screwtln-e:uled aperture 8. formed in its face 9. this aperture extending into the body portion of the section 6, and in this scrmv-threaded aperture is secured a screw 10, which is formed integral with one end of a knurl 11, while the other end of the knurl carries a depending pin 12, this pin passing through an aperture 8, formed in the extending lug 1% of the section 7 of the jaw, the aperture being drilled in alinement with the screw-threaded aperture 8 of the jaw-section (5. and in the lower end of the pin 12 l. secure a key 15. which locks the knurl11 upon the extending lug 110i thejawsection '7. The jaw-section 6 of the wrench is provided with an aperture 16, through which the shank 1 of the wrench is adapted to pass, and the rear wall and the sides of the jaw-section 6 are cut away, as designated at 17, forming two yokes 18 18, which brace and guide the shank 1 of the wrench.
The section 7 of the movable jaw, as heretofore described, carries the knurl 11 and the screw 10, and it is by this means that this section '7 of the jaw is secured to the section 6 thereof. and it can be readily seen that when the jaws of the w rcnch are opened the jaw-section 6 can be moved toward and away from the jaw-section T. In order to move the jaw-sec tion 7 upon the shank 1 of the wrench, 1 provide this section of the jaw with a recess 19 and upon the face of the section 7 opposite to the' face in which the knurl 11 is mounted with a boss 20, which is recessed, as indicated at 21, this recess communicating with the recess 19. In the recess 19 I provide a block :22, having teeth .23 upon its one face, and screw-threaded in its opposite face is a pin 21, having a button upon its outer end, and interposed between the block 22 and wall of the boss 20 isa spiral spring 26, which surrounds the pin 2% and is adapted to normally hold the teeth of the block 29. in engagement with the teeth 2 of the shank 1. This jaw-section T is also provided with an aperture 27 for the reception of the shank l of the wrench.

The operation of my improved wrench is as follows: It being desired to adjust, the jaw 5 upon the shank l of the wrench, the button 25, carried by the pin 24, is pulled or forced outwardly to disengage the toothed block 22 from the teeth 2 of the shank, at which time the jaw- sections 7 and 6 may be moved to the desired position on the shank, and upon the button 25 being released the springs 26 will return the toothed bar 22 into engagement with the teeth 2 of the shank We will assume that the jaw 5 has been moved into engagement with an object and that the teeth 2 of the shank l are not sufliciently fine to lock the jaw 5 into close engagement with the object and that a space of a fraction of an inch exists between the face of the jaw 5 and the object against which it is to be locked. To overcome this objection and to further grip the object, I force the jaw-section 6 of the jaw 5 into further engagement with the object by rotating the knurl 11, carried by the jaw-section 7, and by so turning this knurl I move the jaw-section 6 from engagement with the jaw-section 7, this being accomplished through the medium of the screw 10, operating in the screw-threaded aperture 8. It will thus be observed that a liner adjustment can be obtained than what the teeth 2 of the shank 1 would permit and that a rapid adjustment of the jaw 5 can be made to engage any desired object, and, further, a more permanent grip can be made with the jaw 5 by adjusting the jaw-section 6 thereof.
In so constructing my improved wrench it has been my object to maintain the fine adjustment of wrenches now in use employing screw-threadsfor adjustment, at the same time constructing a wrench Which may be quickly adjusted and then more accurately adjusted I after the movable jaw has been placed in position against the object. Considerable trouble has been experienced in wrenches wherein the movable jaw could not be sufficiently gripped upon the object, this defect often causing the wrench to slip over the object and in many cases injure the object and the person manipulating the Wrench, and it will be noted that, by
my improved construction, these defectshave been overcome and a novel and quick-acting wrench constructed.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
In a wrench, the combination with a toothed shank having a fixed jaw, of a movable jaw sliding on said shank, said movable jaW being composed of two sections, each embracing the shank, the lower section of the movable jaw being formed with an extending lug. a knurled nut mounted on said lug, a screw formed integral with said knurled nut and screwed into one of the sections, said nut and screw being movably mounted in the other of the sections by a pin carried by said nut, a key passing through the pin carried by said screw, a toothed block arranged in a recess in the section in which the screw is mounted and on the opposite side from said screw, a pin connected to said block and extending outside the section, and a spring interposed between the block and the inner wall of the recess in which the block is located.
