WITNESSES v INVENTOR J JamueZ Pdhiflef I I BY KPTORNEY UNITED STATES Zatented September 29, 1908.
SAMUEL P. SHIFLET, OF VERSAILLES, PENNSYLVANIA.
MONKEY-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 740,049, dated September 29, 1903.
Application filed MayZl, 1903. Serial No. 158,160. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
:Be it known that I, SAMUEL P'. SHIFLET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Versailles, in the county of Alleghenyand State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Monkey-Wrenches, and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to wrenches, and particularly to that class of slidin g-j aw wrenches in which provision is made for a quick looking adjustment of the sliding jaw.
The object of the invention is to provide a wrench of this character which is simple of construction and in which the parts are so constructed that an axial movement of the wrench-shank or sliding jaw will lock the two together or release them, so as to hold the sliding jaw in adjusted position or to permit it to be adjusted, as desired.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wrench embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are cross-sections through the shank of the wrench and sliding jaw, showing the jaw in its locked and unlocked positions.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral '1 ,represents the Wrench handle provided with a shank 2. This shank 2 is of cam or eccentric form in cross-- section and is provided at one side with mutilated threads 3, whichmerge at one end into the face of the shank and increase in depth toward their opposite ends. The sliding jaw 4 is adjustable toward and from the fixed jaw 5 and is provided with an eccentric bore 6, formed at one point vwith threads 7 to coact with the threads on the shank. Shoulders 8 8' are formed on the shank and nut to abut and limit the axial movement of one of said parts upon the other when the nut is fully unlocked. v
In operation by axially moving one of the movable parts with relation to the otherthat is, by turning either the shank or the sliding jaw the threads thereof may be thrown out of engagement, leaving the sliding jaw free to be adjusted toward and from the fixed jaw. A-reverse movement of either part to an extent sufficient to cause the major axis of the shank to lie on a line substantially at right angles to the threads of the sliding jaw will bring the two sets of threads into engagement and cause the shank to exert a cam binding or wedging action to hold the threads in engagement. I In this manner the sliding jaw may be quickly released and adj usted, as will be readily understood.
From the foregoing description, taken inconnection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Variouschanges in the'form, proportion, and-the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by'Letters Patent, is-
In a wrench, the combination of a shank of cam or eccentric form in cross-section, and having segmental threads and a sliding jaw having .an eccentric bore for passage of the shank, and coacting segmental threads, the.
construction being such that when one is axially adjusted upon the other, the sliding jaw may be engaged with, and disengaged,
from, the shank,'substantially as described. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL P. SHIFLET.
