Description

' PATENTED MAY 7, 1907 B. MALLETTj I D MAY 31,1906
WHEN
' able jaw of my improved wrench. The jaw 1 FFIQE.
BAKER INIALLETT, OF EDWARDS, MISSISSIPPI.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 1907.
Application filed May 31, 1906- Serial No. 319,618-
To all whom, it In/00y concern:
Be it known that I, BAKER MALLETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edwards, in the county of Hinds and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do declare the following to be full, a clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches, and consists in the novel construc tion, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be of simple, strong, durable and comparatively inexpensive construction and which may be quickly and easily adjusted to engage nuts, bolt heads and the like, of various sizes.
The above and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved wrench; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes the stationary jaw and 2 the movis formed at one end of a head 3, which latter has its opposite end 4 flattened to permit of the use of the device as ahammer. The head 3 is formed or secured to one end of a cylin drical shank or stem 5. The movable jaw 2 has a longitudinal sleeve portion 6, which has a longitudinal, cylindrical bore, through which the shank 5 extends, so that said head with the sleeve or body portion is movable longitudinally on said shank or stem and may also be turned thereon. Inone of the faces of the body portion 6 is formed a longitudinally extending slot or opening 7, which has one of its side walls formed with a plurality of notches or recesses 8, any one of which is adapted to receive a stud or pin9 projecting from the shank 5 and through the slot 7.
The notches 8 form between them teeth I 10. which are approximately half the width l of the slot 7, so that when the jaw 2 is turned slightly upon the shank and the stop pin 9 clears the teeth 10, said jaw may be moved longitudinally upon the shank to adjust it j v toward and from the stationary jaw 1. When so adjusted to fit the nut, bolt-head or the like, which is to be turned by the wrench, the jaw 2 is then given a slight turn in the opposite direction, to cause the same to aline with the jaw 1 and to cause the pin 10 to enter one of the notches or recesses 8. When in the latter position the sliding movement of the movable jaw upon the shank is prevented. Any desired number of the notches 8 may be provided, according to the range of adjustment it is desired to give the movable jaw. Upon the lower end of the shank 5 is secured, by means of a transverse pin 11 or in any other suitable manner, a handle 12, which may be of any desired form and construction.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation and advantages of the invention will be readily under stood without requlring a more extended explanation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. The herein-described wrench comprising a cylindrical shank having a fixed head at one end thereof, a movable jaw having a sleeve portion, said jaw and sleeve portion having a longitudinal, cylindrical bore through which the shank or stem extends, said sleeve portion being further provided with a longitudinal slot and notches in one side thereof, and a stud extending radially from the shank or stem to operate in said slot and engage any of the notches thereof, for the purpose set forth.
2. A wrench comprising a shank, a stationary jaw thereon, a movable jaw mounted to slide longitudinally upon said shank and to have a limited rotary movement thereon, said movable jaw having formed therein a slot provided with notches or recesses in one of its walls, and a stud upon said shank for engagement with said notches or recesses, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
W. A. MONTGOMERY, T. H. W. BARRETT.
