PATENT OFFIC DAVID NELSON, OF RENO, NEVADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ALONZO ROWELL, OF RENO, NEVADA.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,019, dated November 3, 1903.
Application filed May 19, 1902. Serial No. 108,115. (No model.)
invented a new and useful Alligator Wrench,
being an Adjustable Alligator Piperench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pipe-wrenches, and has for its object to provide a strong, simple, durable, and inexpensive implement of the character referred to which will consist of but few parts and which will be efficient in operation.
To these ends my invention consists in the features and in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim following the description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a View, partly in section and partly in elevation, of my improved pipewrench; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the fixed jaw of the wrench, which is formed integrally with a handle 2, and 3' the adjustable jaw,- carried by the fixed jaw. The fixed jaw is enlarged or expanded laterally on its upper edge, as at 4E, (see Fig. 2,) and is provided with teeth or serrations 5. Formed in the jaw 1 is a transverse mortise 6, the opposite end walls of which are provided withinclined faces 7, 8, 9, and 10, the faces 7 and'lO being parallel and arranged at angles relatively to, the faces 8 and 9,which latter are also parallel.
The jaw 3 is provided with a downwardlyprojecting shank 11, the forward edge of which is provided with a series of semicircular recesses 12, any one of which is adapted to engage a stationary pin 13, which is rigidly fixed transversely in the lower forward portion of the mortise 6. Formed in the face 9 of the mortise is a countersink 14, in which is movably arranged a plunger 15, provided at its inner end with a guide-pin 16, over which is disposed one end of the coiled spring 17, that is seated in said countersink and which operates to project the plunger outward against the forward edge of the shank 11.
The operation of my improved pipe-wrench will be readily understood. By drawing the lower end of the shank 11 rearwardly it is caused to disengage the lockingin 13, and the jaw 3 may then be adjusted n proper relation to the jaw 1 to grasp the pipe to be operated upon. On releasing the shank the spring-plunger 15 will immediately move the notched face on the shank 11 into engagementwith the pin 13, and thereby lock the jaw in its adjusted position.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- In combination with a fixed jaw and itsv handle having a transverse mortise, of an adjustable jaw provided with a shank, said shank being provided on its forward edge with a series of recesses, a pin fixed transversely in said mortise and arranged to engage the recessed edge of the adjustable jaw and lock the latter in its adjusted position, a
.plunger movably arranged in a countersink formed in the upper portion of the front wall of the mortise and arranged to bear against the shank of the adjustable jaw, and a spring disposed in said countersink and arranged to forcibly press the plunger against said shank and cause the recessed edge of the latter to engage the said pin, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this application in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
Reno, Nevada.
DAVID NELSON.
