i Appllcationiiled April 21j 1900. Bendito-13,797. (No model.)
To @ZZ z'bwnt it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES O. WOODS, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Owego, in the countyof Tioga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe-VVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has relation to that class of pipe-wrenches comprising a stationary jaw and a slidable sleeve upon the shank thereof carrying a spring-actuated jaw and means for locking the sleeve in its adj usted position on the shank.
It is the purpose of the invention to improve this class of wrenches in the several details of construction, whereby increased effectiveness in operation is obtained in addition to possessing strength and durability and simplicity in construction.
The invention consists in a pipe-Wrench, substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of a pipe-wrench constructed in accordancewith my invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation thereof, showing the slidable sleeve in section; Fig. 3, a horizontal section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the stationary jaw of the wrench, of any preferred construction and formed integral with the shank B, which is .provided with the usual handle C. The shank B upon its inner face has a plurality of teeth Ct, which forms a rack-bar in contradistinction to the usual ratchet-teeth, the teeth a being straight instead of on an incline., Upon the shank B is a slidable sleeve D, which carries a movable spring-actuated jaw E of any preferred construction. The shank h of the jaw E is located in a socket c', formed in the sleeve D when casting the same and is pivoted at d to the side walls of the socket. This socket c is ofsufcient width toallow the lateral movement of the shank b therein, a suitable spring c rendering the jaw E spring-actuated. One end of the spring e engages with a mortised seat g, formed in the shank h of the jaw E, and the opposite end of the spring engagesv a seat f inone of the Walls of the' socket c. The addition of the seat f prevents the end of the spring-,from slipping sidewise when pressure is brought thereon.
The sleeve Dis formed with a chamber l, and Within this chamberis located a notched clamping-block F, adapted lto engage with the teeth d upon the shank B ofthe wrench, said teeth and notches being ot' corresponding form. This clamping-block F has a segmental grooved socket 7L to receive a correspondinglyshaped head i upon the end of a pivoted lever G, thereby forming a loose knuckle-joint between the clamping-block and lever and rendering the parts more certain in their action. This pivoted lever G is spring actuated through the medium of the spring 7e, which presses outward against the inner side of the outer end of the lever and keeps the clamping-block F in engagement with the teeth upon the shank B to hold the sleeve D in its adjusted position.
It will be noticed that the lever Gr is entirely concealed Within the chamber Z of the slidable sleeve D, the chamber being closed upon its four sides, with the exception of the opening in which works the clamping-block F, thereby excluding all dirt and dust from the block, lever, and the spring and rendering them less liable to become inoperative by the dirt and grease coming in contact therewith, as would be the case where the end of the chamber is open and the pivoted lever projecting out through the same. This lever is not operated by pressing on the end thereof with the nger, which requires the end of the chamber to be open and the end of the lever to project out far enough to be within reach of the finger, but is operated by a push-button `I-I, having its shank m extending out through a hole in the wall of the chamber l, so that it may be operated by pressure thereon with the thumb or linger. For convenience of assembling the clamping-block, the lever, the spring, and the push-button the chamber l may be provided with a removable cap-plate I, which forms when in place one of the side walls thereof, said plate being secured in place in any suitable manner.
It is evident that the stationary and movable jaws of the wrench may be changed or modilied in form and construction without departing from the essential features of the ICO invention, and any changes in the detailsof construction as would come Within ordinary mechanical skill may be resorted to without in any manner aiect-ing the operation of the Wrench.
Having now fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pipe-Wrench, comprising a stationary jaw With shank having a plurality oi' straight teeth to form a rack-bar, a sleeve slidable thereon and formed With a socket and closed chamber at its respective ends, a spring-actuated movable jaw having its shank located in the socket and pivoted to the side Walls thereof, and a clamping-block and pivoted lever connected together by a loose knuckle-joint, and means for operating the lever, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A pipe-Wrench, comprising a stationary jaw With shank, a sleeve slidable upon the shank, a spring-actuated movable jaw connected to the sleeve, said sleeve having a closed chamber, a clamping-block located therein, a pivoted lever connected to the block by a loose knuckle-joint, a spring connecting with the lever, and a push-button located Within the chamber and having a shank eX- tending through one of the side Walls thereof, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 3. A pipe-Wrench, comprising a stationary jaw having a shank with its inner face in the form'of a rack-bar, a sleeve slidable upon the shank and carrying a spring-actuated movable jaw, said sleeve being formed with a closed chamber having a removable cap-plate, a clampingblock located in the chamber and adapted to engage the rack-bar ot the shank, a' pvoted and spring-actuated lever connecting with the block by a loose knuckle-joint and contained wholly Within the chamber, and a push-button for operating the lever, substantially as and for the purpose described.
