Description

L.. GLYNN.
Pipe-Wrench,
N0, 165,725, PatentedJuly 20,1875.
STATES ATENT ,i FFICE.
LAWRENCE GLYNN, CF CAMBRIDGEPORT, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PIPE-WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,725, dated July 20, 1875 application filed February 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, LAWRENCE GLYNN, of Cambridgeport, in the county of Middlesex and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Pipe- Tongs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pipe-tongs, consisting in the employment of a handle, to the upper end of which is hinged a hookjaw. Below the hinge-pin ot' the hookjaw is made a slotted opening through the handle, in which is secured an adjustable toothed jaw, the shank ot' which is provided with holes, by means ot'A which, and a bolt or set-screw going through the slotted part of the handle, the said toothed jaw is held firmly in place during the use of the tongs. Incombination with the hooked jaw and the adjustable jaw and handle I use a spring7 by means of which the hooked jaw is automatically held against a pipe placed between the jaws, as will now be more fully shown and described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a side elevation g and Fig. 2'represents a central longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur 011 the drawings.
a represents the handle of my improved pipe-tongs, to the upper end of which is hinged the hook-jaw b, by means of a suitable hin ge-pin, c, as shown. Through the handle is made a slotted perforation, in which is inj serted the adjustable shank d, the inner end c of which is toothed, as shown. The shank d is provided with holes ff, by means of which, and a bolt or pin, g, going through the handle, the adjustable piece d e is held firmly in its desired position in relation to the handle a. To the rear of the handle a is secured a spring, h, that presses on the outside of the hook-jaw b, by means of which the latter is forced automatically against the pipe i, that is clamped between the adjustable toothed jaw e and the aforesaid hookjaw I), as rshown in the drawings. The handle a is moved in the direction of the arrow shown in the drawings, when it is desired to turn a pipe around its axis. The teeth on the jaw e are made pointing downward, as shown, and by means of this, my improved pipe-tongs, a pipe can be held and turned around its axis without any slipping or sliding between the hook-jaw b and adjustable toothed jaw e.
I am aware that a patent was granted to James N. Freestone on the 3d day of September, 1867, for pipe-tongs; but I do not claim such an arrangement, as therein set forth, as my invention. I am aware that a hook-jaw has been used on pipe-tongs; and I am also aware that a spring has been used on the y Witnesses ALBAN ANDREN, J0EEY R. HEARD.
