UNTTED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
WILLIAM S. BONNER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,515, dated December 23, 1902.
Application filed August 4, 1902. Serial No. 118.289. (No model.)
T0 al?, whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. BONNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches; and it has for its objects, among others, to provide an improved wrench of few parts capable of considerable adjustment, easy of operation, not liable to get out of repair, and efficient in use.
Other objects and advantages, prominent among which is the securing of a direct bearing of the adjustable jaw against the shank of the wrench, will hereinafter appear, and the novel features will be particularly pointed out the claim.
I accomplish the objects of the invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view in side elevation of my improved wrench; Fig. 2, a detail in perspective of the adjustable jaw andtits carrier; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a detail in side elevation of the adjustable jaw.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 5 designates the stationary jaw, and 6 its shank, which may be provided of a suitable length to give any desired leverage. The jaw is serrated, as shown at 7, and the shank is provided with teeth or serrations 8, as seen in Fig. 1.
9 is a holderor case comprising two parallel plates connected by a loop 10, which incloses three sides ot' the shank.
11 is an adjustable jaw having lateral pins 12, by which the jaw is pivotally secured to the plates of the holder 9, the said jaw 11 being placed between said plates in the open side of the case, the pins 12 being inserted into suitable openings in the4 said plates, as shown. The jaw 11 also has the lateral pins 13, which are inserted into slots 14 in the and binds the parts in place.
plates of said case. The end of jaw 11 next to jaw 5 is serrated at 15, and its edge adjal cent to the shank 6 and also adjacent to the pins 12 is provided With the teeth 16, which are adapted to engage the teeth 8 of the shank by the action of the cam-lever 17; The case 9, preferably about opposite the teeth 16, has the arms 18, which embrace the shank 6, and at their outer ends has pivotally supported upon a pivot 19 the cam-head 20 of the cam-lever 17.
The adjustable jaw 11 has a spring 2l interposed between it and the shank 6 to press the jaw normally in an outward direction, or away from said shank. This spring is here shown as a spiral one, which is seated in a socket of the movable jaw. As other forms of springs-such as a fiat one, for examplemay be used, it is not desired to limit the invention to the kind of spring here shown.
The operation will be readily understood. The parts being moved into their proper or desired position, the cam-lever is turned so that its cam-head impinges against the shank The pivoting of the movable jaw permits of the desired movements thereof to fit it for a pipe-wrench.
Particular attention is called to the fact that the strain on the movable jaw is delivered through its toothed edge 16 directly to i the shank and does not come upon the pivots 12.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with the toothed shank and stationary jaw, of the holder or case, the movable jaw pivoted to the case and having teeth opposite the pivot to engage the toothed shank, said movable jaw also having pivots which enter slotsin the case, a spring between the shank and movable jaw, and a cam-lever pivotally secured to the case and adapted to move the case so as to engage or release the toothed jaw and shank.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 31st day of July, A. I). 1902.
WVILLIAM S. BONNER.
