WRENCH.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MACKIE, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Sidney Mines, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to wrenches, and the objects of my invention are to provide a quick-acting monkey wrench having an adjustable jaw that is automatically opened relatively to the fixed jaw of the wrench when said adjustable jaw is released, and to provide simple and effective means for locking the adjustable jaw relatively to the fixed jaw of the wrench.
Other objects of my invention are to provide a wrench that is strong and durable and highly efficient for gripping the fiat facets of a nut, and to accomplish the above results by a combination of mechanical elements that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawings wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line III-HI of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line IV-IV of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the detached locking member, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the detached releasing member.
rIhe handle of the Wrench comprises two sections 1 having the outer ends thereof enlarged and provided with longitudinal confronting recesses 2 and longitudinal confronting grooves 3. Mounted upon the outer ends of t-he handle sections is a stationary jaw 4, said jaw having a socket 5 to receive the outer ends of the handle sections. The
.jaw 4 is secured to said sections by a transverse pin 6. The jaw 4 is provided with an opening 7 in communication with the confronting grooves 3 of the handle sections 1. Extending through the opening 7 into the confronting grooves 3 is a shank 8 having a jaw 9, said jaw cooperating with the jaw 4 in gripping the facets of a nut. The shank 8 has a longitudinal groove 10, and located in said groove is a coiled retractile Specification of Letters Patent.

spring 11, said spring havingthe inner end thereof connected to an eye 12 carried by the shank 8, and the outer end of the spring is connected to an eye 13 carried by the jaw 4 within the socket 5. The groove 10 is formed in the front side of the shank 8 and extends from the jaw 9 to a point in proximity to the inner end of the shank.
Located in the inner vend of the shank is a handle 14 that is secured in the shank by a transverse pin 1K5. The handle 14 eX- j tends through a slot 16 in the front sides o-f the handle, said slot being formed by cutting away the confronting front edges of the handle section, as best shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing.
The rear side of the shank 8 is provided l i with transverse teeth 17 and engaging said teeth are the teeth 18 of a pivo-ted locking member 19. The locking member 19 is pivotally mounted in the confronting recesses 2 by a transverse pin 20, the pivoted end of said member being located in the outer end of the recesses 2. The inner end of the locking member has a notch 21 to receive the ends of a releasing member 22. The releasing member 22 is pivo-tally mounted by a pin 23 in an opening 24 provided therefor in the handle sections 1, said opening being formed by cutting away the confronting sides of said section at the rear side of said handle.
Located within the confronting recesses 2 are bow springs 25, said springs having the ends thereof mounted in the walls of the recesses 2 and in the rear sides of the locking member 19, said member having sockets 26 to receive the ends of the bow springs 25. These springs are adapted to normally hold the locking member 19 in engagement with the shiftable shank 8 of the wrench, and it is preferable to locate one of the springs at a point intermediate the locking member 19, and the other spring adjacent to the free end of said locking member, whereby the tension of said springs will be distributed over the locking member 19.
In operation, the wrench is used for rotating nuts or objects having fiat facets. When the releasing member 22 is pressed toward the handle, the locking member 19 is moved out of engagement with the shiftable shank 8, and then the springll located within the groove 10 of the shank, shifts the shank 8 outwardly, opening the jaw 9 relatively to the stationary jaw 4. When the releasing member 22 is released, the bow springs 25 immediately place the locking member 19 in engagement with the teeth 17 of the shank 8, looking this shank in the handle sections. By gripping the handle 14, the shank 8 can be shifted into the handle to close the jaw 9 with respect to the 4, this operation taking place when it is desired to place the jaws 4 and 9 in engagement with the nut. The teeth 17 of the shank 8 recede over the teeth of the locking member 19, said member yielding, together wit-h the releasing member 22, to permit oi the shank 8 being shifted into the handle.
The Wrench is made of light and durable metal, and I reserve the right to construct the gripping surfaces of the jaws l and 9, whereby said aws may be used for gripping a pipe or structure having curved or rounded surfaces.
What I claim is:
A wrench embodying handle sections secured togetherl and having the confronting sides thereof provided With confronting grooves and confronting recesses, a jaw mounted upon the outer ends of said handle sections and having an opening formed therein alining with the confronting grooves of said handle sections, a shank slidably mounted in said handle sections and having the rear sides thereof toothed, the front side of said shank having a longitudinal groove formed therein, a jaw carried by the outer ends of said shank, a handle carried by the inner ends thereof and protruding from the front sides of said handle sections, a coiled retractile spring located within the groove of said shank and having one end thereof connected to said shank, and the opposite end thereof connected to the jaw of the handle sections, a pivoted locking member arranged in the recesses of said handle sections and normally engaging said shank and a releasing member pivotally mounted between said handle sections and engaging the inner ends of said locking member for shifting said member out of engagement with said shank.
