To all whom it may concern Be it known that LEDWARD H. SoHULTz, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Cloud, in the county of Stearns and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Combination-Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of this invention is a wrench wherein pivotally mounted jaws are cooperatively associated, and the objects of the invention are, first, to provide a wrench which may be quickly adjusted to the work, second, to provide a wrench which will have a ratchet action upon its Work, third, to provide means for clamping the jaws upon the work, fourth, to provide means for converting the wrench to various uses, fifth, to provide a simple cheap and efficient wrench.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the com bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein. disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
A practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention:

Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference :In carrying out the invention a pipe cutting handle 1 is provided at one end of which is formed or secured the hand grip 2 while the other end of the handle is bifurcated to form the prongs or arms 3, the inner opposed walls of which are off set outwardly to form the reduced end pieces 4:. These ends 4: may be of any suitable form but are; preferably, as here shown, cylindrical.
Pivotally secured between these end pieces 4 by means of journaling pins 5 is a first jaw 6 which is apertured to receive, with a close sliding fit, a bar 7 which extends from and is preferably integral with a second jaw 8.
Straps or links 9 are pivotally secured to the jaw 8 and lie one on each side thereof. The other ends of these straps are pivoted to each side of the handle 1.
Each jaw is provided in its opposed working edge with a transverse clove-tail groove 10 and a bore 11 is formed in each jaw to communicate with the groove 10. Each bore 11 is tapped to receive a screw 12 the end of which threads into a tongue formed on a removable jaw plate.
When the device is to be used as an ordinary wrench, the jaw plates have tongues 13 which enter the grooves 10 in which they are bound as described the main plate 14 resting against and being coextensive with the working face of the jaws 8 and 3. The opposed faces of these plates 14 may be corrugated as shown to provide a firmer grip.
It is to be understood that the jaws 8 and 3 may be made solid without removable jaw plates if desired. When the device is to be used as a pipe wrench the plates 16 and 16 are attached to the jaws 8 and 3, respectively.. These plates have tongues 15 which enter the grooves 10 and the opposed faces of the plates are inclined as shown and formed with transverse ribs forming teeth, the teeth of one plate preferably facing in a direction opposed to those of the other.
In Figs. 7 and 8 jaw plates for use in pipe cutting are shown. The plate 18, intended for attachment to the jaw 8 has a tongue 17 which enters the groove 10. The plate is channeled and between its side flanges rollers 19 are mounted, the pins of the rollers being journaled in said flanges. These rollers bear upon the pipe during cutting and prevent binding of the tool.
The other jaw plate 20 also has a tongue 17 which enters the groove 10 of the jaw 3 and the forward end of this plate is channeled to receive and journal a circular cut-' ter 21.
When threads are to be out the plates 23 are provided which are formed with opposed recesses 24 in which are formed the thread cutting teeth 25. These plates also have tongues 22 which enter the grooves '10 and hold the plates in place on the jaws.
The wrench is normally in the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4. When it is to be used the jaw 8 with straps 9 are swung to one side, as seen in Fig. 3, which causes the bar 7 to be drawn through the jaw 3 and also rocks the jaw 3 upon its pivot to maintain the jaws at all times parallel.
.. The jaws a e placed about the work in the usual manner and the handle drawn downwardly, as viewed in Fig. 3 which throws the jaws against opposed faces of the work and clamps there firmly thereon.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and sought by Letters Patent, is
A wrench comprising a straight handle including terminal arms; a first jaw pivotally mounted between the outer ends of the arms; a bar slidable in the first jaw trans versely thereof and provided at its outer end with a second jaw disposed parallel to the first jaw; and straight links having their outer ends pivoted to the second jaw, the inner ends of the links being pivoted to the handle intermediate the ends of the handle, the links, the bar and the arms forming a bracing triangle when the wrench is in use, of which triangle the second jaw and the bar form an integral part, the links being located to the rear of the jaws thereby to leave the space between the jaws unencumbered, the links lying parallel to the arms, and the arms being located between the links, when the jaws are brought together, thereby to economize space.
