/lllllflf//l//l/Q AUGUST SCHUBERT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WRENCH.
Specificationxof Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17', 1908.
Application led April 21, 1908. Serial No. 428,432.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known thatV I, AUGUST SCHUBERT, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wrenches and the object of my invention, is to provide a wrench the jaws of which, may be readily opened and which will close themselves about the part to be engaged thereby.
A further object of my invention is to provide a wrench as mentioned, which shall be of simple construction, of low cost to manufacture and easy to operate.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view, my invention consists generally in a wrench comprising a stationary jaw having a shank forming a handle, and a movable jaw having a shank sleeved longitudinally through said stationary jaw and handle, a ratchet edge on the shank of said movable jaw, and a spring pressed latch on said handle having a serrated end to engage said ratchet edge to prevent outward movement of the movable jaw when the wrench is in service.
My invention further consists in a wrench comprising a stationary jaw having a handle formed thereon and a movable jaw having a shank sleeved longitudinally through said stationary jaw and handle, a serrated edge on the shank of the movable jaw and a latch on said handle having a serrated end to engage said ratchet, said latch having a thumb piece whereby it may be retracted from engagement with said edge and a spring adapted to close said jaws when the latch is retracted.
My invention further consists in various details of construction and arrangements of parts all as will be described more fully hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a wrench embodying my invention in its preferred form, the movable jaw and its shank being shown in elevation and the jaws being partially opened, Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the latch retracted, and the aws closed, and Fig. 3 is an edge view of the wrench, the jaws being closed. j
Referring now to the drawings, 1 and 2 in dicate the stationary and movable aws of the wrench which are of the usual form. Formed integrally with the jaw 1 is the handle 3 which comprises a'straight shank portion l and a grip 5. The movable jaw 2 is provided with an integral shank 6, preferably rectangular in cross section and of a length substantially equal to that of the aw 1 and the handle 3. The shank 6 is inserted longitudinally through the jaw 1 and the handle, the same being provided with a longitudinal recess or passageway 7 to receive the shank. The shank 6 is cut away throughout a portion of its length and upon one edge as at 8 forming a recess having the shoulders or ends 9 and 10. A spring 11 is arranged within the recess 8 and a pin 12 extends through the adjacent wall of the handle into said recess, the spring being interposed between said pin and the end wall 9. It is obvious that the spring at all times tends to close the jaws.
The opposite edge of the shank 6 is serrated forming a ratchet edge 13 which is engaged by a spring pressed latch 14 pivotally mounted in the handle. The latch is arranged in a transverse recess 15 formed in the handle between the ears 16 and is pivotally mounted upon a pin 17 extending through said ears and said latch. The end of the latch is serrated as at 18 to engage the edge 13 of the shank 6, and the pin 17 is arranged forwardly of the serrated portion so that the latter may be readily withdrawn or retracted from said edge.
19 indicates a thumb piece or lever portion formed on the latch by means of which the end 18 is retracted. Interposed between the rear face of the latch 14 and the adjacent wall 20 of the handle is a spring 21 which normally holds the latch in engagement with the serrated edge. The upper rear end of thc latch is provided with a lug 22 which rests in a notch or socket 23 formed in the face of the handle when the wrench is in operation, and which prevents the latch from moving too far forward under the strain incident to using the wrench. If greater strength is required the front wall 24 of the recess 15 may be arranged to impinge against the front beveled or angular-ly disposed face 25 of thc latch as shown in Fig. l, in which case the lug 22 may be dispensed with or not as desired.
In using the Wrench, the latch is retracted and the jaw 2 opened against the tension of the spring 1l. The latchis then released and the Wrench placed in position about the parts to be engaged thereby. The thumb piece 19 is again depressed, retracting the latch and the spring immediately closes the jaws upon the Work. lVhen the latch is released, the jaws are firmly locked.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A Wrench comprising a stationary jaW having a shank forming a handle, in combination With a movable jaw having a shank inserted longitudinally through said stationary jaw and handle, the shank of the movable jaw having a ratchet formed on one edge and a longitudinal recess formed in the other pin and the Wall` forming the end of said recess, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AUGUST SCHUBERT.
