To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEFAN REVAY, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Johnstown, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certam new and useful -lmpro' 'iements 1n justment, the device being easy and inex pensive to manufacture and possessing great strength and durability.
A turther'object of the device is the pro vision of a quick action double wrench arranged with suitably tensioned positioning means the tension of which may be readily adjusted. at will.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a wrench in which the jaws may be readily moved into contact with the work without the necessity of operating any turn members or screws, holding means being provided for securing the jaws in. suitably spaced relation at any point of adjustment to which the same has been moved.
In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which'like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a side elevation thereof wit parts shown in central section, and
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, a shank 10 is arranged with a transverse head or jaw member 11 fixed upon one free end thereof provided with opposite jaws 12 and 13. A movable jaw member 14 is arranged upon the shanklO comprising a collar 15 having a passage 16 therethrough andin which the shank 10 is slidably arranged while oppositely projecting jaws 17 and 18 are carried by the said collar similar in form and adapted for coiiperation with the jaws 12 and 13 respectively.
A side slot 19 is arranged in the shank 10 within which an elongated rack 20 is longitudinally positioned having one end pivoted as at 21 adjacent the free end 22 of the said shank. A tensioning spring 25 is arranged Within the slot 19 bearing against the inner side of the rack 20 for normally forcing the rack outwardly into engagement with the said collar tooth 23. An adjusting screw 26 is swiveled upon the lower end of the spring 25 being threaded into a recess 27 in said shank end 22 for permitting the entrance of a tool such as a screw driver for engaging the kert 28 of the screw for turning the latter to impart longitudinal movement to the spring 25.
A finger engaging piece or lug 29 outwardly projects from the rack 20 and it willbe understood that the movable aw member 14 may be freely moved toward the jaw member 11, the tooth 23 ratcheting over the rack teeth 24 and maintaining the jaw member 14 in its adjusted posltion upon the work. The rack 20 may be disengaged from the collar 15 by pressing inwardly upon the lug 29, thereby permitting the jaw member 1a to be freely moved in an opposite direction away from the jaw member 11 and disengaging the wrench from the work. The inner free end of the spring 25 normally rides upon the inclined inner face or bottom 30 of the slot 19 so that the adjusting of the spring 25 in a direction toward the head 11 exerts greater tension upon the rack 20 while the reverse movement of the spring decreases such tension. m
The jaws 10 and 17 have their adjacent faces parallel for engaging straight work such as the parallel faces of turn nuts, While the inner engaging faces 31 of the jaws 13 and 18 are of opposite curvature adaptin the same for engaging cylindrical or curved bodies.
