UNIT@ STARS PATENT OFFICE.
HAROLD B. SOHN AND FRANKLIN C. MILLER, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 28, 1908.
Application filed June 28, 1907, Serial No. 381,305. Renewed March 20, 1908. Serial No. 422,235.
To all whom fit 'may concern:
Be it known that we, HAROLD B. SOHN and FRANKLIN C. MILLER, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usen ful Improvements in I/Vrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
rlhis invention relates to wrenches, for rotating bodies or objects having fiat or curvilinear surface.
The invention has for its object to provide a combined pipe and monkey Wrench having a quick action, which permits of the adjustable jaw of the `wrench being easily and quickly moved, without the use of screw threads or their mechanical equivalent for minutely adjusting the jaw of a wrench.
Another object of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive wrench capable of withstanding the rough usage to which wrenches are ordinarily subjected, the wrench having practically no exposed delicate parts that might be broken.
W'ith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be presently described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation of our wrench, Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the movable jaw thereof in section, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of a wrench taken on the line of Fig. 1.
To put our invention into ractice, we construct our wrench of a sha i 1 having a detachable handle 2, and a fixed head or jaw 3, which upon one side is provided with angular gripping surfaces 4 but upon the opposite side with a flat gripping surface 5, the former being used for curvilinear surfaces and the latter for flat surfaces. The shank 1 upon its sides is provided with longitudinally dis posed grooves 6, the object of which will presently be described.
Slidably mounted upon the shank 1 is a movable jaw 7, one side of which is recessed as at 8 for the web 9 of a block 10 having a curved toothed gripping surface 11 adapted to coperate with the angular gripping surfaces 4 of the jaw of head 3. The web 9 of the block 10 is pivotally mounted in the recessed jaw 7 by a pin 12, and normally holding said block in an elevated position is a spring 14 securedto the aw 7, as at 15, said spring engaging in a notch 16 formed in the web 9 of the block 10.
The j aw 7 is provided with ribs 17 adapted to slide in the groove 6 of the shank 1, said ribs steadying the aw 7 and preventing either side thereof from sagging. The jaw 7 is provided with diametrically opposed recesses 1S in which are located coil springs 19 adapted to bear against the sides of the shank 1 and frictionally retain the aw 7 at any position to which it may be adjusted upon'the shank 1.
Suitably secured in the opening 19 of the jaw 7, through which the shank 1 passes, is a plate 20 having a knurled surface 21 adapted to engage the edge of the shank 1 and prevent the jaw 7 from slipping upon the shank, when pressure is brought to bear upon said jaw.
A structure having a curvilinear surface, such as a pipe, is gripped between the angular surfaces 4 of the jaw 3 and the toothed curved gripping surface 11 of a block 10, while the nut or object having flattened surfaces is gripped between opposite ends of said jaws.
The jaw 7 can be easily and quickly adjusted to any desired position, the minute adjustment of the jaw depending upon how close the jaw can be placed in engagement with the structure 1 so as to be rotated.
It is thought that the construction and operation of the wrench will be apparent from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, and we reserve a right to make such changes in the details of construction as are permissible by the appended claims.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A wrench comprising a shank having longitudinally disposed grooves, a fixed jaw carried by the shank and provided with a flat and angular gripping surface, a slidable jaw mounted upon the shank provided with a pair of diametrically opposed recesses, springs housed in said recesses and adapted to engage the shank to frictionally retain the sliding jaw in its adjusted position, said sliding jaw further provided in its u per face with a recess, a gripping block o a width substantially equal to the width of the slid,- ing jaw and normally maintained above the upper face of said jaw, a web depending from said gripping block and pivotally conneoted in the reoess formed in the upper face l carried by the shank and provided with a iat and angular gripping surface, a slidable jaw mounted upon the shank provided with a pair of diametrieally opposed recesses, springs housed in said recesses and adapted to engage the shank to frietionally retain the sliding jaw in its adjusted position, said sliding jaw further provided in its upper face With a recess, a gripping block of a Width substantially equal to the Width of the sliding jaW and normally maintained above the upper face of said j aw, a Web depending from said gripping block and ivotally oonneoted in the recess formed in t e up er face of the sliding jaw, a spring securedp to the upper faee'of the sliding jaw and engaging said Web for maintaining the gripping block in an elevated position7 and a knurled plate screwed into the sliding jaw and adapted to engage the shank to prevent the slipping of the j aw.
In testimoniT whereof We affix our signatures in the presence of two Witnesses.
