CLARK E. SULLIVAN, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
WRENCH.
Application filed July 2, 1915.
Be it known that I, CLARK E. SULLIVAN, a ,Litizen of the United States, residing at Grand. Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of fiehigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon, which forni a part of this specification.
his invention relates to new and useful improvements in nut wrenches and consists essentially in the provision of a, sliding aw wrench, actuated by means oA` rack and pinion and in the provision of an adjusting screw.
rlhe invention consists further in the provision of a self-adjusting wrench of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: j
Figure l is a side elevation of the wrench, parts being broken away to better illustrate features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a View showing the wrench partly closed.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates one jaw which has a slot B therein for the reception of the shank portion D of the sliding aw E, said shank portion having teeth F upon one edge. A pivotal pin H passes through registering slots in the jaw A and upon this pin H the head K of the handle K is pivoted, said head having circumferential rack teeth which are in engagement with the rack teeth upon the shank portion of jaw E. An eX- tension A has a convexed milled edge A2 against which a thumb may bear for the purpose of ready and convenient adjustment of the jaw by the thumb of the hand gripping the handle.
Mounted within the chamber of the shank portion of the wrench is a coiled spring L bearing against the bottom of the recess in which it is mounted and the edge of the head Specification of Letters Patent.

of said handle and serves as a friction means to prevent the jaws striking together. Teeth I are formed upon the opposite edges of the handle and an interiorly threaded ring N is mounted upon said threaded portion, its movement in onev direction being limited by the pin O.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood and is as follows: When a person grips the handle, the thumb of the operator may conv miently engage the milled edge of the projection of the jaw, allowing the two jaws to be moved toward or away from each other and, when in adjusted positions the interiorly threaded ring may be secured upon the handle to hold the jaws in proper adjustment.
What I claim to be new is 1. A wrench comprising a jaw with a chambered portion, a handle with a head pivoted within the chamber of the jaw and having teeth upon the end thereof, a second jaw with a shank portion movable through a slot in the chambered jaw and having teeth upon one edge for engagement with the teeth at the end of said handle, and a thumb projecting upon the chambered jaw forming means whereby the jaws may be adjusted, and means for holding the jaws in adjusted positions.
2. A wrench comprising a jaw with a chambered portion, a handle with a head pivoted within the chamber of the jaw and having teeth upon the end thereof, a second jaw with a shank portion movable through a slot in the chambered jaw and having teeth upon one ed e for engagement with the teeth at the en of said handle, a thumb projecting upon the chambered jaw forming means whereby the jaws may be adjusted, a handle of the jaw of the wrench having threads, and an interiorly threaded ring engaging the threads upon the handle and adapted to bear against the projection of the chambered jaw to hold the two jaws in adjusted positions.
3. A wrench comprising a chambered jaw with a lateral projection, convexed upon its edge and milled, a pivotal pin passing through the chambered portion of the wrench, a handle with a head positioned within the chamber of the wrench and pivotally mounted upon said pin and having teeth at its end, the edges of the handle protion, a second jaw and n 'shank portion mov'- able through the Slot in tho chmnbeed )aw and hmjmg Sermtlons upon one edge egaging the teem upon the ond of' the` handle'.
