WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1911.
Application filed June 20, 1910. Serial No. 567,898.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV BRODHAGEN, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Neuhaus, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved wrench which is constructed so that it grips the nut the stronger the more often it is lifted and lowered. W'ith wrenches of known construction in which a nut is used for regulating the position of the adjustable jaw with regard to the fixed jaw, said nut gets loose when the wrench is employed. This inconvenience is absolutely obviated by the present invention.
In the accompanying proved wrench is shown.
Figure 1 shows the wrench gripping a nut, the several parts being represented in the positions which they assume when the wrench is at rest; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the various parts of the wrench in operative position.
The nut 0 is to be gripped in the well known manner by the jaws a and b. The upper jaw a has a threaded shaft d which can be lifted or lowered by means of the nut e mounted in the fixed bracket f. Said bracket f has slots 9 in which pins 2' of the lower jaw b are guided.
in is the pivot of the hand lever and 'n is a spring which continuously pushes the lower jaw away from the upper jaw.
The improved wrench operates as foldrawings the imlows :For turning the nut c the wrench is applied in the well known manner (Fig. 1). The handle m is gripped by the hand and depressed whereby the lower jaw b which forms a spring slide is strongly pressed against the nut c. The jaws of the wrench grip the nut the stronger the greater the pressure exerted upon the handle m. If the pressure upon the handle m ceases the spring a pushes the movable lower jaw away from the nut c.
I claim An improved wrench comprising in combination a guide piece having vertical borings for the jaws, and longitudinal slots in its walls, the fixed or upper jaw adjustably mounted in one of said borings, a nut revolubly mounted in said boring and upon the threaded shaft of said fixed jaw, the movable jaw located in said second boring, pins of said movable jaw engaging with said longitudinal slots in the walls of the guide piece, a spring located in said guide piece and maintaining the movable jaw in lowered position, and a hand lever pivotally mounted in the lower end of said guide piece so that its upper end bears against said movable jaw, substantially as described and shown and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAV BRODI-IAGEN.
