WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,077, dated January 12, 1886.
Application filed September 15, 1884. Serial No. 143,091. (No model.)
To 0. whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Hans A. LARSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in renches; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to the class of wrenches known as monkey-wrenches, and the object of the invention is to provide means whereby the movable jaw can be more quickly adjusted than by the screw commonly used.
Myinvention consists in providing aspring at the back of the wrench under the sleeve which bears the movable jaw, by means of which spring a serrated section of the lower portion of the sleeve is held in engagement with a serrated bar provided on the lower edge of the shank; and in providing athumbpiece and guard to facilitate the use of the spring, and in certain details of construction hereinafter more fully set forth.

The movable jaw a is rounded interiorly in its upper portion for the purpose of pivoting the jaw and sleeve at that point to allow the rear end of the sleeve to be moved up and down, and the lower portion of the jaw a fits closely to the shank A, and a recess, (1, is pro vided at the middle to permit the jaw to slide over the bar 6, hereinafter described.

The serrations of this bar fit into those provided in the sleeve and hold the sleeve and movable jaw in place.

tween the upper portion of the sleeve and the back of the shank and riveted to the sleeve. Both ends of the spring are free to slide along the back ofthe shank when the sleeve is shifted. The spring lifts the rear end of the sleeve and holds the serrations-e and e" in engage ment, preventing the slipping of the movable jaw when the wrench is being operated.
f is an extended thumb piece at the back of the sleeve, affording a leverage for operating the spring 0.
b is a guard, preferably cast as a part of the ferrule h, and fitted into a notch in the under edge of the shank A, and should extend about two or two and a half inches along the shank. It should be just sufficiently removed from the shank to permit the sleeve to pass under it. The guard enables the tool to be more firmly gripped in depressing the spring 0 and adj usting thejaws, and keeps the fingersfrom contact with the bar e,where they are liable to be pinched in shifting the sleeve.
When it is desired to adjust the jaws, the tool should be grasped about the guard b,with
the thumb resting on the part f. Then, by.
pressure of the thumb, the sleeve and jaw a are rendered free to be quickly adjusted to the desired position.
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent 1s The con1bination,with the shank A, hearing the fixed jaw a, and provided with serrations e, of the sleeve B, carrying the jaw a, which is rounded interiorly in its upper portion to pivot said jaw and sleeve on the shank A, the serrations e in the lower portion of said sleeve, the spring 0, secured beneath the thumb-piece f, and the guard b, all constructed and arranged substantially as described.
