SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,625, dated March 30,1897. Application iiled December 10,1896l Serial No. 615,170. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL W'ILLBRANDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rectal Speculums, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention relates to that instrument for physicians and surgeons use known as ak rectal speculum, and it consists in certain improvements whereby such instruments are automatically engaged and held in desired position, while at the same time rendered capable of being quickly disengaged.
An instrument elnbodying my said invention Will be first fully described, and the novel features thereof then pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof and on which similar iigures of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the method of using my improved, instrument; Fig. 2,v a top or plan view of the same in its initial position, with the catch swung to one side, its distended position being indicated by means of dotted lines; Fig. 3, a central vertical sectional View of the same, and Figs. 4 and 5 fragmentary details as seen from the dotted lines 4 4 and 5 5 in Fig. 3.
The instrument consists of three jaws 1, 2, and 3, the jaws 2 and 3 being connected by the pivot4, while the jaw 1 is arranged to slide over said pivot, which serves as a guide-post for it, and is operated bya pair of toggle-links 5 and 6, secured to the handle ends of the jaws 2 and 3. At a point between the pivot 4 and the point where the links 5 and 6 arev attached thereto the jaw 1 is provided with a series of ratchet-teeth, and there is preferably also a groove in its upper face, which splits said ratchet-teeth into two parts, as shown. Pivoted to the upper end of the pivot 4 is a spring-pawl 7, which has an engaging point adapted to engage with the ratchet-teeth on the jaw 1. These parts are so positioned that when the handles of the jaws 2 and 3 are forced together and the stem of the jawl moves rearwardly the pawl 7 will engage with the ratchet-teeth on said stem and hold it to any point to which it is forced. The instrument will therefore be held to any desired point of distention by said pawl.
In order that the instrument may be quickly and readily released, I provide a thumb-lever 8, the lower end of which is in the form of a cam and rests in the groove of the upper surface of the stem of the jaw 1. As is best illustrated in Fig. l, by pressing on the thumbpiece of this lever 8 the pawl is raised out of engagement with the ratchet-teeth, and the instrument then is in position to recede to its initial position or to any intermediate point desired. A suitable spring 9 is interposed between the handles of the jaws 2 and 3 and serves to force the parts back to their initial position when the pressure of the hand of the operator is relieved. As shown in Fig. 2, in any case where it is desired to use the instrument without the pawl it may be readily swung to one side out of the way, as shown by the full lines in Fig. 2.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a rectal speculum, of two pivoted jaws and one sliding jaw, a ratchet on the stem of said sliding jaw, and a pawl adapted to engage with said ratchet and hold said jaw to its open or distended position.
2. The combination, in a rectal speculum, of two pivoted jaws and one sliding jaw, said sliding jaw being provided with a slot passing over an extension of the pivot uniting the two pivoted jaws near one end, and united to the handles of said pivoted jaws at or near the other end by means of toggle links, a ratchet on the stem of said sliding jaw, and a spring-pawl also mounted on the pivot uniting the pivoted with the ratchet on the sliding jaw, said several parts being arranged and operating substantially as shown and described.
' 3. The combination, in a rectal speculum, of two pivoted jaws and one sliding jaw, the latter being provided with a ratchet, a springpawl adapted to engage with said ratchet, and a cam-lever united to said pawl whereby it may be raised out of engagement, substantially as shown and described.
