WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern: 4
Be it known that I, WALTER W. Bowen,- a citizen of the United; States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which'the following is a specification. j v
The present invention relates to. improvements in wrenches. i
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a Wrench which will be readily adjustable so as to fit a nut of any size and one which will hold securelyon the nut'when engaged thereon.
I further aim to provide a wrench of a comparatively inexpensive construct on 1n which few interchangeable parts are employed.
With the above recited ob ects in view and others which will appear as the natureof I the invention is developed the improvement resides in the novel construction, c'ombination, and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within thescope of the appended claim.
In the drawing,,.Figure 1 is a side elevation of .a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view upon the line' 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4
is a detailed elevation, parts being broken away and showing the jaws provided with removable teeth.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral 1 designates the improved wrench in its entirety. The wrench comprises essentially a stationary jaw 2 which is-provided with a longitudinally extending shank 3, the same being provided upon its under face with a plurality of teeth 1. The teeth have one of their walls inclined toward the jaw 2 while the opposite wall is perpendicular to the shank. The portion of the shank beyond the teeth 1 and adjacent the end of the said shank is provided with a lurality of spacedtransverse openings -5. Ihe shank 3 is of a lesser thickness than the stationaryjaw or head 2, and arranged to slide upon the said shank. 8 is the movable jaw 6. The jaws 2 and 6 have their co-acting faces provided with teeth and the toothed face of the aw 6 is arranged at an inclination, so that a slight space is always g :main'tainedbetween the said jaws at the lower portions of the jaws. The movable jaw 6 1s, of course, provided with a passage Specification of Letters Patent.
Application flled May 7, 1912. Serial No. 695,65

rear portion formedwith, what may be termed a sleeve 7. The sleeve has its lower face provided with depending ears 8 befor' the shank 3, and the said jaw 6 has its tween. which is pivoted, as at 9, a lever 11 i which is in turn pivotally co ected with a pawl 10. The upper end 0' the pawl is beveled to correspond with the inclined poiq tionsof the teeth.
The'numeralll designates a lever or'hau dle which is pivotally secured between the ears 8 and which is loosely connected to the pawl 10;
The numeral 12 designates a flattened spring member which is secured to' the under face of the sleeve and which contacts with "the lever 11 of the-pawl to normal-1y force the tooth of the pawl into engagement with the. teeth of the shank.
The numeral 13 designates the operating lever for the wrench. This lever has one of its extremities bifurcated as at 14, the arms provided by the said bifurcated portion being extended downwardly as indicated by the numeral 15. The handle at the juncture of its oil'set portion 15 and its straight portion is formed with an opening, the said opening bei'ng adapted to receive a removable pivot, such as a screw 16. By this arrangement, it will be noted, that the pivot 16 may be brought into engagement with any of the openings 5 of the shank 3,
so that the said shank may be longitudinally adjusted with relation to the lever 13.
The numeral 17 designates a link which is pivotz'illy secured as at 16 between the arms of the offset portion 15 of the lever 13,
while the opposite extremity of the said link is pivotally connected with the sleeve 7 as From the above description, taken in connection, 'with the accompanying drawing,
the
the simplicity of the dcyice as well as advantages thereof, will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertain with out further detailed description. It may be stated, however, that in some instances and especially when an extremely small wrench is desired the link 17 may be dispensed with and the extremity of the arms 15 may be loosely connected with the sleeve.
In Fig. 4 I have illustrated the faces of the jaws 2 and 6 recessed and provided withf removable teeth 20. The tooth member are formed with a reduced shank 21 whicl? coincides with the size and shape of the depressions, and the said shanks ,are retained within the depressions through the medium of removable pins 22.
Having thus described the invention what I claim is The herein described construction of Wrenches embodying a jaw having an anj gu'larly arranged shank which has its lower 10" videdw itha plurality of transversely aredgeproVided-with teeth, and which is proranged perforations adjacent its end, a le- 'ver or handle having a slotted end which is provided with downturned side arms adapted to be arranged upon the shank, the longitudinal arms of the slotted lever being provided with an opening, a pin passing through Qopies of this patent may be obtained for the openings and through one of the perforations of the shank, a slidable jaw arranged forlongitudinal movement upon the shank oft-he stationary jaw, the said movable jaw having spaced ears, a spring-pressed lever pivotally connected between the ears, a pawl loosely connected with the lever and adapted to engage with the teeth of the shank of the stationary jaw, and a link connection between the ends of the downturned arms of the operating lever and the movable'jaw. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature .in presence of two witnesses.
