Be it known that I, HARRY G. VHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Templeton in the county of Armstrong and State of Fennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specilication.
The invention has relation to the type of tools known as wrenches and embodying a shank, a fixed jaw at one end of the shank, a movable aw slidable upon the shank, and means cooperating with the movable jaw and shank to hold the movable jaw in the required adjusted position.
The invention has particular reference to the type of wrenches embodying a plurality of dogs arranged to coact with ratchet teeth A provided upon the shank, such dogs having an arrangement so that only one of the dogs at a time is in full engagement with the ratchet teeth of the shank, the remaining dogs occupying different stages of engagement with the ratchet teeth but not in full engagement therewith.
This invention relates more particularly to the means for operating the dogs and to the specific arrangement of such means with reference to the dogs and theparts `of the wrench and also to the dogs and the manner ofV mounting the same in the shank of the movable jaw, such dogs being retained in` place and normallyactuated upon by V'means of springs which have a peculiar arrange ment and are attached to the shank of the movable j aw.
A further purpose of theinvention is the provision of a wrench of the class hereinbefore specified which is simple in construction and of such formation as` to admit of the parts being readily assembled and easily replaced should occasion require.
With these and other objects in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly claimed. f
In the accompanying `drawings hasbeen illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitationis necessarily made to theV precise structural .details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention as claimed may be resorted to when desired.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wrench embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a side view, parts being broken away; Fig. 3 is a section of the movable jaw on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 44 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the dogs.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
rIhe wrench comprises a shank l, which carries a jaw 2 at one end and a handle 3 at its opposite end. rlhe inner or lower face of the shank l is formed with ratchet teeth 4. The aw 2 is xed.
A movable jaw 5 is slidable upon the shank l and is formed with a shank 6 which is arranged to extend along the inner or lower face of the shank l. Eyes 7 and 8 are formed at opposite ends of the shank 6 and receive the shank 1 which is slidable therein. The eye 8 is formed with a finger piece 9 which extends along the outer or upper face 'of the shank 1. A plurality of openings 10 are formed transversely of the shank 6 and are of uniform size throughout their length. The openings 10 receive dogs 11 which are freely movable therein toward and away from the shank l. The inner ends of the dogs 11 are formed with teeth 12 which are adapted to match with the teeth 4 and coperate therewith to hold the movable jaw 5 in the adjusted position.
Springs 13 and 14 are attached to the shank 6 and project over the openings 10 and engage the outer ends of the dogs 11 and serve to retain such dogs in place and to press their inner toothed ends into engagement with the toothed portion 4 of the shank 1. One of the springs, as 14, is single whereas the spring 13 is double, that is it is attached at a middle point to the shank 6 and its opposite ends engage adjacent dogs. Each of the dogs 11 is cut away upon its outer side adjacent its inner end, as indicated at l5, to provide a clearance for the arm of the operating lever as also to form a shoulder for such arm to engage. A longitudinal recess 16 is formed in the inner side of the shank 6 adjacent an outer wall of the openings 10 and this longitudinal recess intersects the inner ends of the openings 10. The recess 16 at its forward end extends part way into the eye 7 and its rear end is in communication with a recess at the rear end of' the shank 6. A fiange 17 extends along one side of' the shank 6 and is adapted to overlap the toothed face of the shank 1.
A lever is provided for operating the dogs 11 and comprises a finger piece 18 and an arm 19. The arm 19 is arranged to occupy the longitudinal recess 16 and the finger piece 18 the recess at the outer end of the shank 6. piece 18 projects beyond the shank 6 and is disposed opposite the finger piece 9 and is adapted to be pressed upon when it is required to move the dogs 11 outward to disengage their toothed ends 12 from the teeth 4, whereby the jaw 5 is free to be moved upon the shank 1 toward or away from the jaw 2. The arm 19 engages the cut away portion 15 of' the dogs 11. When the finger piece 18 is pressed upon the arm 19 moves outward and engages the shoulders at the inner ends of the cut away portions 15 ofA the dogs 11 and moves the latter outward against the tension of the springs 13 and lf-l. The finger pieces 9 and 18 are gripped between the thumb and a finger of the hand and are utilized as means for moving the jaw 5 upon the shank 1 to the required position. Vhen the finger piece 18 is relieved of pressure the dogs 11 are pressed inward and the teeth of some one of such dogs will fully engage the teeth and hold the jaw 5 in the adjusted position. rI he teeth of the remaining dogs will engage the teeth 1J: at different stages. This arrangement enables a nicety of adjustment of the movable jaw 5 so as to insure a firm grip of the work and prevent any possible play between the jaws of the wrench and the part gripped between such jaws. The operating lever is pivotally connected to the shank 6 by means of a pin 2O which passes through registering openings formed in the shank and lever. In the normal position of the lever the linger piece 18 stands away from the toothed face 4 of the shank 1 and the arm 19 projects from the inner face of the shank 6 a distance corresponding approximately to the flange 17 so as to overlap the inner toothed face of the shank 1. This arrangement prevents any foreign matter from coming between the adjacent faces of the Shanks 1 and 6 and interfering with the operation of the dogs 11. The depth of the recess 16 is such as to limit the outward movement of the arm 19, thereby preventing over straining the springs 13 and 14 when operating the lever to press the dogs 11 outward to cause their inner toothed ends 12 to clear the teeth 4 of the shank 1. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a tool of the character specified, the combination of a main shank toothed along its inner face and provided with a jaw, a movable jaw slidable upon the shank and having a shank adjacent the toothed face of the main shank, a plurality of dogs mounted upon the shank of the movable jaw and toothed at their inner ends to engage the teeth of the main shank at different stages, and an operating lever pivotally mounted upon the inner side of the shank of the movable jaw between the same and the main shank and at one side of the main shank and adapted to engage the dogs.
2. A tool of' the character specified comprising a main shank provided with a jaw and having a face formed with teeth, a movable jaw slidable upon the main shank and provided with a shank in which is formed transversely a plurality of openings, dogs mounted in the openings of the movable shank and having their inner ends toothed and arranged to engage the toothed face of the main shank at different stages, said dogs having their inner ends cut away at one side, springs normally pressing the dogs inward, VYand a lever pivoted to the movable shank and comprising a finger piece projecting from one end of the same and an arm engaging the cut away portions of the dogs and extending along the toothed face of the main shank at the sides of the same.

A tool of the character specified comprising a main shank toothed along one face and provided with a fixed jaw, a movable jaw slidable upon the main shank and formed with a shank extending along the toothed face of the main shank and provided at intervals with transverse openings and having a longitudinal recess at its inner face intersecting the transverse openings, dogs arranged in the transverse openings of the movable shank and having their inner ends cut away at one side to register with the longitudinal recess, and an operating lever pivoted to the movable shank and disposed in the longitudinal recess of such shank and engaging the cut away portions of the dogs, the wall of said recess limiting the movement of the free end of the lever away from the main shank.

In a tool of the character described` a main shank toothed along one Jface and provided with a jaw, a movable jaw slidable upon the main shankand formed with a shank extending along the toothed face of the main shank and formed with transverse openings and a longitudinal recess in'one inner side face intersecting with the inner ends of the transverse openings, said shank having a longitudinal flange at one side overlapping the toothed face of the main shank, dogs mounted in the openings of the movable shank and having their inner ends cut away to register with the longitudinal recess of the movable shank, and an operating lever pivotally mounted upon the movable shank and disposed in the longitudinal recess thereof and engaging the cut away portions of the dogs, said lever being disposed at the side opposite the said longitudinal flange and arranged thereat to overlap the toothed face of the main shank.
5. In a tool of the character described, a main shank having a toothed face and provided with a jaw, a movable jaw slidable upon the main shank and provided with a shank extending along the toothed face of the main shank and formed with a plurality of transverse openings, dogs mounted in the transverse openings of the movable shank, springs attached to the outer face of the movable shank and overlapping the transverse openings and bearing upon the outer ends of the dogs to retain the same in place and normally exerting a pressure to move the dogs inward, and a lever mounted upon the movable shank and disposed between the same and the main shank and adapted to engage the inner ends of the dogs to press the same outward.

A wrench comprising a main shank having a face toothed and provided with a jaw, a movable jaw slidable upon the main shank and formed with a shank extending along the toothed face of the main shank and formed with a plurality of transverse openings and having a longitudinal recess in one inner face intersecting the inner ends of the transverse openings and also formed with a longitudinal flange to overlap the toothed face of the main shank, the movable shank having eyes at opposite ends, the rear eye having an outwardly extending linger piece overlapping the outer face of the main shank, dogs arranged in the transverse openings of the movable shank and having their inner ends engaging the teeth of the main shank at different stages and having their inner ends out away at one side to register with the longitudinal recess of the movable shank, springs for retaining the dogs in place and normally pressing them inward, and an operating lever comprising a finger piece and an arm pivoted upon the movable shank with the finger piece projecting therefrom and overlapping the toothed face of the main shank and opposed to the firstmentioned inger piece the arm being disposed within the longitudinal recess of the movable shank and engaging the cut away portions at the inner ends of the dogs.
