LOGAN SMITH, OF OAKLEY, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO EDDIE E. SMITH, 0F DECATUR, ILLINOIS.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 29, 191*.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOGAN SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakley, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
This invention comprehends certain new .and useful improvements in wrenches and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character which will be of eX- tremely simple construction and operation as well as cheap to manufacture and highly eficient in use.
The invention has for another object to provide a device of this character in which the pawl for engagement with the rack teeth and the shank of the tool may be resiliently retained in operative position by means ofa leaf spring which has one end secured in the forward portion of the movable jaw, one end of the pawl projecting from the front face of the movable jaw for engagement by the operators finger to disengage the nose of the pawl from the rack teeth and swinging said pawl upon its pivot against the tension of the leaf spring.
The invention has for a further object to provide a wrench 'of this character which will be constructed in such manner that it may be readily and easily operated and should any of the parts become worn or broken, they may be readily replaced at small cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved wrench with parts in section, and Fig. 2 is a detail transverse section on the plane of line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the shank having the handle members 9 secured on its one end and the regular stationary jaw 3 mounted upon its opposite end, while the rack teeth 5 are formed on the front face of said'shank 1 for a limited distance from the handle members 2.
Slidably mounted for longitudinal movement upon the shank 1 is a movable jaw 6 which has its front side open, as shown at 7, and a pawl 8 mounted therein and adapted to swing upon the pivot pin 9 which eX- tends transversely through the front portion of said jaw 6. The pawl 8, when in its engaging position, has its nose 10 en gaged with the rack teeth 5, previously men tioned. The pawl 8 is resiliently retained 111 its engaging position by means of a spring 11 which has its inner end engaged against the shoulder 12 formed at the enlarged end of said pawl 8, adjacent the pivot pin 9 for said pawl 8. The leaf spring 11 may be moved longitudinally through the opening 13 in the gripping portion of said movable jaw 6, said slot 13 being inclined to place the leaf spring 11 at the proper incline, as will be readily understood by referring to the drawings. The leaf spring 11 is held in position by means of a screw 14 or the like secured in the side of the movable jaw 6 abutting the handle and engaged through said leaf spring 11, the head of said screw 14 being flush with the face of the jaw 6 sliding upon the smooth portion of the front face of the shank 1, as will be readily understood by referring to the drawings, thereby making it impossible for the screw 1,4 to work loose or the spring 11 to move in either direction, or be removed without first removing the movable jaw 6 and then removing or loosening the screw 14. This assures the spring 11 being held in proper position and at the same time making it possible for said spring to be readily replaced, when desired, which is a great advantage as all springs in tools of this character frequently become inefiective or break, making it necessary to replace the same, to restore the tool to proper condition and eflicienc While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
XV hat is claimed is A wrench comprising a shank, a stationary jaw on one end of said shank, a handle formed on the opposite end of said shank, said shank provided with rack teeth on one edge, a movable jaw slidably mounted upon said shank and having a recess formed in one face, a pawl mounted in said recess, its nose normally engaged with said teeth, a fiat leaf spring rigidly secured by one of its ends in one Wall of said movable jaw and having its opposite end extending into said recess for engagement against the inner side Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents LOGAN SMITH.
