To all whom t may] concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE W. STALEY and CHARLES W; STANLEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Bluecreek, in the county of Stevens and State of lVashington, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in V-renches, of which the following is a. specification.
lThis invention' has relation to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches, and has for its primary object the provision of an improvedform of self-adjusting wrench which will be of a simple construction and operation.
The invention has for another object the provision of a wrench4 of the oscillating handle type which will automatically adjust itself to a nut or a bolt and which vwill be of such construction and operation that the jaws will separate and ride over the corners of the nut or bolt upon movement of the handle in one direction, but will automatically tighten upon the nut or bolt or other work upon movement of the handle in the opposite direction. y
rlhe invention has for a further object the provision of a wrench ofthis character which will include means for normally retaining the jaws in closed position while the tool is being applied to work in a restricted space. j
W7 ith the above and other objects in View, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as hereinafter setforth in the specification, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the complete device partly in section; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the wrench; Fig, 3 is a detail section on the plane of line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the adjustable jaw slide block removed; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the adjustable jaw; and Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the wrench with a portion of 'the handle and release rod broken away.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, l'designates the head of the wrench, from which projects the stationary outer jaw 2 for cooperation with the inner movable jaw 3 which has an oppositely anged guide foot 4 formed upon its lower face and engaged in the upper guide channel 5 of the inner jaw slide block 6, the opposite flanges of the foot 4' being engaged beneath the longitudinal guide flanges 7 eX- tending over the opposite sides of the guide channel 5, as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 5 of the drawings. The rear wall of the guide channel 5 serves to limit the inner movement of the inner movable jaw 3 within'said channel 5, while the oppositey end of said channel is open to permit 'insertion or removal of the guide foot 4. i Y
The inner jaw slide/block 6 has longitudinal movement through the head 1, inwardly of the jaws 2 and 3 and has the longitudinal guide ribs 8 formed on its opposite sides and 'engaged in suitable guide grooves 9 formed in the inner faces of the opposite sides of said head 1 to insure proper movementV of the inner jaw slide block 6 within said head 1. The inner end of the inner jaw slide block 6 is rounded and reduced to provide a central ear 10, through which a pivot pin 11 is engaged, said pivot pin 11 also extending through the spaced rounded ears 12 formed at the inner corner j of the handle 13 by cutting away the central portion of said inner corner which will be readily understood by referring to the drawings. lA suitable recess isformedin the inner portionof the head 1 to accommodate the inner or forward end of the handle 13. The handle 13`also has a plurality of rounded teeth 14 formed on its upper face at its inner end and within the head 1, said teeth havingzengagement with corresponding teeth 15 formed in one wall of the recess within which the inner end of said handle 13 is engaged, whereby movement of the inner jaw 3 toward and away from the outer stationary jaw 2 will be caused by sliding movement of the inner jaw slide block 6 when the handle 13 is oscillated and the head 1 is held stationary. It will be readily seen, that, when the working faces of the jaws 2 and 3 are engaged with a nut or other work and the handle 13 moved in one direction, the jaw 3 will be forced toward the jaw 2 and the jaws tightly clamped upon the work. As soon as the handle 13 is moved in the reverse direction, however, the jaw 3 will move away from the work and the jaw 2 and the wrench' may then be turned for the purpose of obtaining a new grip upon the work or removing the wrench.
In order to normally retain the jaw 3 in closed relation with the jaw 2, we have provided a pivotedv linger 16 which has its point engaged with the rearrounded face of the inner movable jaw 3, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and which is pivoted to the lower inner corner of the head 1, as'shown at 1T, while one end of the release rod 1S is pivoted to the opposite or inner end of said finger 1G. rlhe release rod is slidably engaged through a. pair of ears 19 mounted upon one face of the handle 13 near the outer end thereof and has a tension spring 2O engaged around the same between said ears 19 and secured by one end to said release rod 18. The tension spring 20 serves to normally retain the release rod 1S in its outer or unoperated position and thereby hold the finger 16 in the position shown in F ig. 1 to prevent further movement of the inner movable jaw 3 away from the jaw 2. As soon as it is desired to permit further separation of the jaws 2 and 3, it is simply necessary to press inwardly upon the release rod 18 and oscillate'the handle 13 in the proper direction.
While the preferred embodiments of the invention have been clearly shown and described, it will be understood that minori changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages of the same.
VlVhat is claimed is:
l.V A wrench including an outer j avv having a recessed body portion, an oscillating handle engaged in said recessed body portion, a sliding jaw block mounted on said handle and movable through said jaw, and a movable jaw mounted upon said movable jaw block.
2. A wrench comprising a recessed jaw, a handle having one end engaged in said recess, a stationary jaw carried by said head,
a slide block within said head and pivoted to said handle, said handle'and jaw having interlocking teeth to cause sliding movement of the slide block upon oscillation of the handle, a movable jaw carried by said slide block, and means for limiting movement of said movable jaw in one direction.
3. A wrench comprising a head, a handle having an enlarged end engaged in said head, a stationary jaw carried on said head', a slide block pivoted to said handle and having sliding movement in said head, a movable jaw mounted in said slide block for coperation with said stationary jaw, said slide block and movable jaw being adapted to be moved toward and away from the stationary jaw upon oscillation of the handle, a stop finger engaged with said movable jaw to retain the latter in normal position, a release rod pivoted to said stop finger, and means for resiliently retaining said release rod in unoplerated position.
4( A wrench including a head having an outer jaw formed thereon, an oscillating handle engaged in said head, a movable jaw block carried by said handle, and a movable jaw carried by said movable jaw block for coperation With the first-mentioned jaw.
5. A Wrench including a head having an outer jaw formed thereon, an oscillating handle engaged in said head, a movable jaw block carried by said handle, a movable jaw carried by said movable jaw block for coperation with the first-mentioned jaw, and means for limiting movement of said movable jaw in one direction.
