ADON D. CROSBY, OF CUBA, NEWV YORK.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,738, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filed December 31, 1884.
To all whom itv may concern:
Be it known that I, Anon DENNIS Gnosnv, of Cuba, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention pertains to improvements in a hand or combination tool, and it consists of the combination of parts and their construction, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed. v
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal perspective view of the entire tool, and Figs. 2 and 3 perspective views of the two limbs of the tool detached.
The tool in its general construction is composed of two independent limbs or levers. and handles, A B, the one, A, of which has its tail and handle portion fitted to pass longitudinally and freely through a slot, 1), in the other limb, B, and is constructed at its one end with a wrench-head or jaw, c, forming an integral portion of it, and fashioned to constitute on its outer extremity a claw, d. The under or one margin of the forward portion of this limb A is of jagged construction, or made with teeth 6, and the upper or other margin of it, where or beyond where it passes through the slot 1), has a similar back row of teeth, f, while the rear or handle portion extremity of it is constructed to form a screw-driver blade or point, 9. The other limb,B,is also constructed at its forward end to form a wrench-head or jaw, h, that on its under or inner portion projects outward in front, and is provided with teeth 71, which engage with the teeth 6 of the limb A, and is made to present a hammer-head, it, below or on the opposite side or edge portion of it to that on which the jaw h is situated. Said limb B-that, like the limb A, extends backward to form one of the handles of the tool-is also provided with a toothed projection, l, which engages with the teeth j on the limb A. These limbs A and B are not only fitted to slide freely and longitudinally through or one outside of the other, but are capable of being rocked the one upon the other in direction of the length of the slot 1), to engage or disengage, as required, the
(N0 model.)
toothed portions 6 i and f Z with or from each other, for the purpose of holding or adjusting the wrench-heads c h to suit difierentsized nuts or work. Said limbs A and B, too, are
detachable one from the other by making the tail or handle portion of the limb A sufficiently thin throughout its length to pass in and out of or through the slot 1) in the limb B. When the two limbs A B are fitted together, as shown in Fig. 1, the tool not only forms a readily adjustable and secure wrench, but it may also be used in its other capacities, as specified, or still more conveniently so by sliding the one limb out of or off the other, and using either the limb A as a prizing-claw by its forward portion, (1, or as a screwdriver by its rear extremity, g, and the other limb, B, may be separately used as a hammer by the portion as the striking head or part thereof.
This combination-tool will be found exceedingly convenient in working on machinery, on wagons, and on various other occasions, saving much time and labor in looking for separate tools, and being cheaper and more convenient generally. 1n the construction of it the jaw or head 0 of the limb A not only forms a claw, d, but also a handle whereby to work the screw-driver blade or point 9, and the hammer-head k, in addition to its function proper, acts as a weight, when the limb B is lowermost, to throw the toothed portions cz' and f l into engagement with each other.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combinationtool comprising the two limbs, one having a screw-driver at one end, a tack-claw anda wrench-jaw at the other end, a serrated or toothed surface upon one edge at said latter end, and a serrated or toothed surface upon its opposite edge intermediately between itsends, the other limb having a serrated or toothed surface upon one edge at one end, a hammer-head, and a wrench-j aw disposed oppositely to each other, and a toothed or serrated surface arranged to engage the intermediate corresponding surface of the aforesaid limb, substantially as shown and described.
