COMBINATION-TOOL.
SFEUIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,830, dated May 31, 1898.
Application filed August 26,1897- Serial No. 649,651. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH C. KARNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mexia, in the county of Limestone and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Combination- Tool, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to combination-tools.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of combination-tools, more especially hatchets, and to provide one which may be conveniently arranged to operate as a wire-cutter and to serve as a stock for a bit, screw-driver, or similar tool.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hatchet constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, the pivoted bar being shown in full lines arranged to form a bit-stock and in dotted lines to provide a wire-cutter. Fig. 3 is a detailperspective view of a pivoted bar. Fig. t is a transverse sectional view of the handle of the hatchet, showing the screw in engagement with the same and with the pivoted bar.
Similar reference-numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a hatchet-head having a claw 2 and provided at the end of its handle 3 with a taperingrecess 4, forming a wrench, and provided at one side with inwardly-shouldered teeth 5, adapted to engage a pipe, rod, or nut.
The handle 3 is provided between its ends with a longitudinal slot or opening 6, having its outer portion slightly enlarged and provided at opposite sides of its inner portion with notches 7, adapted to cooperate with the recess 8 of a bar 9 to form a wire-cutter. The bar 9, which is pivoted in the longitudinal slot or opening of the handle, is provided at its inner end with a slot 10, receiving a transverse pin 11, which constitutes the pivot of the bar 9 and which extends across the opening 6 at the inner end thereof.
The recess 8 forms opposite cutting edges, which are adapted to sever a piece of wire when the same is placed within the notches 7.
The bar 9 operates as a lever and is adapted to be swung inward toward the handle to effeet the operation of cutting.
The slot 10 is diagonally disposed or arranged at an angle to the longitudinal diameter of the bar 9 to provide a wedge-shaped portion 12, which is adapted to be forced between the pivot-pin and the adjacent end of the opening to lock the bar 9 at right angles to the handle, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings, in order to provide a stock for bits and similar tools. The slot permits the bar 9 to have a limited longitudinal movement to engage the wedge-shaped portion 12 of the handle and to disengage it therefrom.
The outer portion of the bar 0 is enlarged and provided with a socket 13 for the reception of the shank of a screw-driver 14, bit, or other similar tool, which is secured within the socket by a set-screw 15. The set-screw 15 is mounted in a threaded perforation 16 and is also adapted for securing the pivoted bar 9 in the opening of the handle. The handle 3 is provided with a threaded opening 17, and when the pivoted bar 9 is folded within the opening, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, the screw 15 engages both openings 16 and 17. The enlargement of the outer end of the opening 6 snugly receives the enlarged portion or socket of the bar 9.
The invention has the following advantages: The pivoted bar is snugly arranged within the opening of the handle 3 when it is not in use, and it is adapted when swung outward to provide a convenient wire-cutter. It can be rigidly arranged at right angles to the handle of the hatchet, and when in this position it forms an efficient bit-stock and is adapted to receive a screw-driver, bit, or similar tool. The screw for securing the pivoted bar within the opening of the handle of the hatchet also serves for fastening a screw-driver or other tool in the socket of the said pivoted lever.
It will be understood that changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a hatchet or analogous tool composed of a head, and a handle rigid with the same and having a longitudinal slot, of a bar provided at one end with a socket and pivoted at its other end in the longitudinal slot of the handle and adapted to lie in the slot when the hatchet is in use, said handle and bar being provided with opposite notches forming a wire-cutter, and a fastening device adapted to secure a tool in' the socket of the bar and retain the latter in the slot of the handle, substantially as described. 7
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a handle provided with a longitudinal opening, a pivot extending across the opening at one end thereof, a bar arranged Within the opening and adapted to receive a screw-driver or similar tool, and provided with a slot receiving the said pivot, said slot being disposed at an angle and forming a wedge-shaped portion adapted to be interposed between the pivot and the handle at the adjacent end of the slot, whereby the bar is rigidly locked in position, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a handle provided With a longitudinal opening and having a threaded perforation at one side thereof, a pivoted bar arranged within the opening and provided with a socket and having a threaded perforation at one side thereof adapted to register with the threaded perforation of the handle, and a screw adapted to engage the said perforations and capable of securing the bar in the opening of the handle and also of securing a screwdriver, bit or similar tool in the socket of the bar, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH O. KARNER.
