TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 17, tore.
Original application filed March 5, 1918, Serial 0. 220,590. Divided and this application filed January 20,
1919. Serial No. 272,055.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL K; NOME- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Porter, in the county of Yellow Medicine, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tools and particularly to combination tools, and is a divisional'application taken from my application for patent for improvements in combination tools filed March 5, 1918, Ser. No. 220,590.
One object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved construction wherein is produced a combined hammer and wrench, and cooperating means on the hammer and wrench for holding a, saw; blade.
Another object is to provide a novel and improved structure of this character wherein the adjusting element of the wrench serves the additional function of tensioning the saw blade.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool made in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectionalview taken on the line 3-8 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a shank on one end of which is secured a hammer head which includes the claw portion and the striking portion, said portions being shown at 11 and 12, respectively. The other-end of the shank is enlarged, as at 13, and is formed with an obliquely extending stationary jaw member 14. Formed through the enlargement in a plane at right angles to the working face of the jaw 14 is a slot or groove 15, in which is slidably disposed the rack-toothed shank '16. Formed integrally on the intermediate portion of this shank lo .the movable jaw.member 17 which is slidably disposed through the outer portion .of the groove 15 and an ranged for movement toward and away from the jaw 14. The groove is reduced at its outer portion, as shown at 18, for the purpose of retaining the shank 16 and jaw 17 in proper position.
It will be noted that the shank 16 eX- tends beyond both ends of the jaw 17, and in the portion 16, which extends beyond or outwardly from the end of the groove toward the hammer head, there is disposed a screw or pin 19 for reception in. the aperture 20 of the saw blade 2-1.
Disposed in the striking portion of the hammer head, in alinement with the shank 10 of the tool, is a screw or bolt 22, the head of which is bifurcated, as at 23, for the reception of the other apertured end of the saw blade, a transverse pin 24 being disposed through the bifurcation and the end of the saw blade to retain the latter in proper position.
In the inner wall of the groove 15 there is formed a recess 25, and disposed in this recess is an externally threaded member 26 which meshes with the teeth of the rack shank 16. A bolt 27 is secured. within the enlargement of the shank 10 and is disposed longitudinally through the member 26, acting as a pivot pin on which the member 26' may be rotated whereby the shank 16 will be moved longitudinally in the groove, thus adjusting the aw of the shank toward and away from the jaw 14.
This sliding movement of the shank 16 is especially useful in regulating the tension of the saw blade, it being understood that when the jaw 17 is moved toward the jaw 14, the saw blade will be pulled toward that end of the shank 10, and the tension of the blade raised to the degree desired. Thus the sliding jaw of the wrench serves the dual function, of its normal work-engaging function and the function of tensioning the .saw blade.
What is claimed is:
1. A combination tool including a shank having a wrench at one end including a movable jaw having a shank, a projection at the other end of the first shank, and a removable saw blade detachably secured to the projection and to the aw shank, Whereby when said jaw shank is moved the ten-- sion of the saw blade Will be changed.
2. A combination tool including a handle shank, a projection at one end of the shank,
a Wrench at the other end of the shank in cluding a sliding shank carrying a Wrench jaw, means for attaching one end of a saw shank, a projection at one end thereof, a Wrench at the other end of the shank including a jaw-moving shank movable in a direction generally longitudinally of the handle shank a saw blade secured detachably to the said projection, and a lateral pin carried by the jaw-moving shank and engaging With the other end of the saw blade.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
SAMUEL K. NOMELAND. Witnesses: I
P. O. SHENNUM, JOHN HENTGES.
