v .To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHN'W. REHLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the. invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved wrench; and it consists in the certain details of construction and combination of parts, as
will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation'of my improved wrench, the same being constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.- Fig. 2 is a section side elevation of'the forward portion of the handle, showing the inner segmental thread and the exteriorv eccentric groove. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a sectional end elevation taken through the handle of the wrench on the linew a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the sliding or movable jaw of the wrench and a portion of the handle of the same, showing a device for locking the said handle to prevent rotatable movement. Fig. 6 is an end elevation of the same.
To construct a monkey-wrench in accordance with my invention, I provide a bar 3, rectangular in cross-section, and fit the same with a stationary head 1 and a sliding jaw2 after the manner common in this class of tools. The bar 3 is'formed on two of its edges for a portion of its length with threads 4, adapted to engage with sectional threads 6, formed in the forward end of thehandle 5 in such a manner that the sliding jaw 2 may be locked at any point by engaging said threads the one with the other or by a quarter-turn of said handle release the said jaw to be moved in either direction. Formed at the forward end of the handle 5 is an eccentric groove 7 which engages with a lug 8, formed integral with the under portion of the movable jaw 2, thereby attaching the two together the one to move with the other. This eccentric connection above described is for the purpose of making slight adjustment of the jaw 2 by turning the handle'5, causing said jaw to be moved back or forward at will. i
To look the handle 5, if itis desired, a device, such asshown at Figs. 5 and 6, is provided,
in which case a serrated portion 10 is formed about the handle at the rear of the groove 7 and a movable strap 11 loosely attached to the jaw 2, the said strap being formed with serrations on the inner sides'of its free ends to register with those of the handle and held in position by means of a screw 13, operating in a slot 12 in the strap, whereby said strap may be moved forward and back.

Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. The herein -described monkey-wrench, comprising the bar 3 having a fixed head 1, a
moving jaw 2, said bar being formed with threads 4 on two of its sides, a rotatable handle'5, having inner sectional threads 6, and an external eccentric groove ,7 said handle being adjustably connected with the sliding head 2 by anintegral lug 8 extending into said groove, as and for the purpose described.

The herein-described wrench, comprising the bar-3, the fixed head 1 and movable jaw 2, said-bar being ,formed with threads 4 on two of its sides, a rotatable handle attached to said sliding head by means of a lug 8 op erating in an eccentric groove 7 formed in the forward end of said handle, and a'sliding looking device to hold the handle and prevent turning, substantially as and for the purpose described.
