Application filed January 8, 1921. Serial No. 434,698.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ADoLrHUs \I. SHENK, ANDREW SALTZER, and LOUIS SALT- ZER, citizens of the United States, residing at Calexico, in the county of Imperial and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches of the type havingone jaw that is movable in order that it may be adjusted toward and away from the other or fixed jaw, the principal objects of our invention being to provide a relatively simple, strong and durable wrench,-the construction of which enables it to be easily, and cheaply produced; further, to provide a wrench having a movable jaw that can be easily and quickly adjusted toward and away from the fixed jaw, said movable or adjustable jaw being provlded with means which very effectively lock it to the shank or body of the wrench when adjusted to the desired position. i
"With the foregoing and other ob ects in view, our invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts that will be hereinafter more fully de scribed and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a wrench constructed in accordance with our invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the wrench with the handle broken away.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a part of the shank or body of the wrench and with the adjustable jaw positioned thereupon.
Referring by numerals to the'accompanying drawings which illustrate a practical embodiment of our invention, 10 designates the main body or shank of .the wrench, the same being formed of a substantially straight bar of metal, the lower end thereof being formed into a handle 11, and the upper end having formed thereon a laterally projecting jaw 12, the under face of which is toothed or corrugated, as designated by 13.
One edge of the body or shank 10 is provided with transversely disposed teeth 14, and arranged to slide freely upon this toothed portion of the shank is a sleeve 15, preferably ametal tube that is subitantlally square or rectangular incross secion.
Formed integral with the upper end of this sleeve is a laterally projecting jaw 16, the upper face of which is toothed or corrugated, as designated-by 17.
Portions of the side walls of sleeve 15 project beneath the jaw 16 to form ears 18, and seated therein is a transversely disposed pm or rivet 19 upon which is pivotally mounted a dog 20 1n the form of a metal block, the inner face of which is providedwith transversely disposedteeth 21 that are adaptedto engage the teeth 14 on shank 10.
Seated in the under side of jaw 16 is one end of a bow spring 22, the same extending downwardly and curved outer face of dog 20, and the lower end of said how spring is connected in any suitable manner to a transversely disposed pin or rivet 23, which latter is positioned just beneath the dog'or block 20.
Bow spring 22 is connected at a point intermediate its ends tothe dog or block 20 in any suitable manner, preferably by means of a rivet such as 24. The upper end of a flat spring 25 is pivotally connected to the pin or rivet 23, and the lower end of said flat spring is fixed in any suitable manner to the lower portion of the adjacent face of sleeve 15.
Projecting outwardly from the lower portion of sleeve 15, and below the point where springs 22 and 25 are; connected, are ears 26, in which is seated a transversely disposed pin 27 and fulcrumed thereupon is a relatively short lever 28, the upper end of which is provided with notched ears 29 that receive the ends of pin 23.
The outer face of the lower portion of lever 28 is knurled or corrugated as designated by 30, in order that it may be firmly engaged by the thumb or finger when-the movable jaw is being shifted toward or away from the fixed jaw.
Under normal conditions the bow spring 22 and flat spring 25 cooperate to exert inward pressure upon the lower portion of dog 20, thereby retaining the teeth 21 on said dog in engagement with certain of the teeth 14 on shank 10, and, with the parts so positioned, the wrench can be used in inwardly against the the ordinary manner for manipulating a nut or for turning or holding a pipe or small piece of work.
if? adjust the jaw l6towardor awayi'rom "fixed jaw" 12," itis onlynecessary to place the thumb or finger on the corrugated lower face of lever 28 and exert suflicient pressure to swing said lever on Its fulcrum and mov e" pin 23-outwairdly, which action necessarily flexe the springs and 25,;and' by such operation the dog 20 is swung upon axis so that the teeth 21 are disengaged from vthe teeth 14, and the sleeve and partsearriedz thereby are now :freefto be moved lengthwise upon shank l0. .7
Qbviously when the pressure uponithe lower end of Ilever 28 is-removed, the-cooperating springs will actuate dog EZO-so that the teetlrthereof are engaged with the teethon shank 10, with the result that the sliding jaw is locked to said'shank in-its gadjustable position. 1
i: A Wrench of our improved construction is icomparatively simple, is quick acting, in that the movable jaw can beyinstantly adjusted toward or away fromthe fixed'jaw, andsaid wrench is adapted for a widevarivety of uses.
wil
i Various changes in the size, form and .no'nstruction of the various parts of our improved wrench may be made and substituted for those herein shown a'nddescribed, withoutdeparting from the spirit of our invention, the soope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
- l Ve claim as our invention:
1; A wrench having a shank and a fixed jaw, a jaw mounted on the shankEior movementtoward or away irom the fixed jaw,
nected to said s i-ingsior flexing said sprmgs and effecting the disengagement of the dog from said shank.
2. A wrench comprising a shank having a handle on one endand a fixed jaw on the other end and having transversely disposed teeth intermediate of its" ends, a sleeve sliding freely upon the toothed portion of the shank, a movablejaw upon one end of the sleeve in oppositionto the fixed jaw, ears extendingfrom the sleeve onopposite sides of the teeth of the shankand from the'movable jaw, aidog mounted between the ears and having teetlr'forengaging theteeth of the shank, a pin holding the dog inposition,
a spring having one end seated in the movable jaw and engaging the dog, a rivet in the'ifree end of the spring, means for connecting the spring to the dog, a second spring connected to the rivet and to the 'sleeve,,ears extending from the sleeve past the sides of the second spring,- and a lever pivotally connected to the ears and engaging the rivet connecting the two springs, there being, a handle upon the opposite end of thelever from the rivet so that by pressing the handle the dog is released from'the shank and by releasingthe handle the springs press the dog-against the shank.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this vspecification.
