WRENCH.
Application filed January 7, 1924. Serial No. 684,788.
This invention relates to wrenches and has particular reference to an improvement in Stillson wrenches.
Some of the principal objects of the pres ent invention reside in the provision of wrench of this character, which is quickly adjustable, which permits of a proper functioning in connection with artlcles of an extremely small size or which need a very accurate adjusting, which is comparatively of parts, set forth in the following specification illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly set forth in the appended claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side view thereof with parts broken away and shown in section, and illustrating the relative position of the parts when making adjustments.
Figure 3, is a similar view illustrating the jaws locked in fixed relation.
Figure 4, is a fragmentary rear edge view.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 10 designates the fixed jaw which is provided with a rigid shank 11 having a handle 12 at the end opposite from the jaw 10. A movable jaw 13 is associated with the fixed jaw for relative adjustments toward and away from the same and for relative rocking movement with respect thereto and said movable jaw is formed with a shank 14. The fixed jaw 10 is provided with a rigid yoke 15 which embraces the shank 14 of the movable jaw and is provided with a longitudinal arcuate inner wall 16 in its bight 17. The shank 14 is provided with a pair of longitudinally spaced lugs 18 projecting laterally from its opposite sides adjacent the end remote from its jaw 13 and a substantially V-shaped yoke 19 has the free ends of its legs arranged between the lugs 18. A transverse pivot pin 20 extends through the shank 14 and the free ends of the legs whereby the yoke 19 is capable of a limited swinging movement with respect to the shank '14. The inner face of the bight 21 of the yoke 19 is provided with a longitudinal arcuate series of ratchet teeth .22. A pair of leaf springs 23 are interposed between each side edge of each leg of the yoke 19 and each lug 18 whereby theyoke is normally maintained at a true right angle to the shank 14. A leaf spring 24 is secured to the edge or face of the shank 14 which confronts the shank 11 and said spring 24 normally functions to effect engagement of the ratchet teeth 22 with a longitudinal series of ratchet teeth 25 on the outer edge of the shank 11. The confronting faces of the jaws 10 and 13 are formed with ratchet teeth 26' and 27 which serve to engage with and grip the pipe, shaft or other article to be turned upon turn ing of the wrench in one direction.
- In'use and operation of the wrench the free extended end 28 of shank 14 constitutes a thumb engaging portion for moving the shank 14 toward the shank 11 whereby to disengage the teeth 22 and 25 thereby permitting of relative longitudinal movement of the shank 11 and 14 for effecting relative adjustments of the fixed and movable jaws 10 and 13 to coincide with the article to be turned by the wrench. vAfter this adjustment isvmade the release of pressure of the'thumb in the end 28'will permit the leaf spring 24 to function to reengage the teeth 22 and 25to lock the jaws 10 and 13 in theiradjusted relation. The movable jaw 13 is now capable of a limited relative swinging movement to alternately grip and release thearticle as the wrench is turned in opposite directions as is the case with any ordinary Stillson' wrench. It will be noted that the arcuate inner wall 16 of the bight 17 of the yoke 15 and the arcuate ratchet teeth 22v allow or compensate for this swinging movement while it will be further observed that the pivotal connection very smallest diameters or of very exact adjustments.
Having thus described our invention what we claim is:
In a wrench of the character set forth, a
fixed jaw having a shank, a movable jaw movement, and means cooperating with said having a shank, interengageable means for yoke for normally maintaining the same at 1 locking the shanks against longitudinal a true right angle thereto.
movement, a yoke carried by the fixed jaw In testimony whereof, we have signed our 5 and the shank of the movable jaw respecnames to this specification this 27 day of tively and each embracing the other shank, December, 1923. the yoke of the movable jaw shank being E1111 ANGELO CAPONEGRO. tached thereto for limited relativepivotal CHARLES PERGOLA.
