Description

W. L. MORGAN.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 5. 1921 Patented Dec-13, 1921.
WL.Mory fl r If. 0. QLMM mvEN'roR A-rr'onuzv wmuasts UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER L. MORGAN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI;
WRENCH.
To all 10 from it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER L. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis City and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe wrenches and has for an object the provision of a quick adjustable wrench which may be operated with one hand, to securely grip or release a pipe or other object.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character which includes a novel form of jaw, the latter being movable relatively to and engageable with the shank of the other jaw, so that when the jaws are adjusted and pressure is applied, pressure upon the pipe or other object will be exerted from the outer jaw, its shank and the movable or inner jaw, while the latter will be securely locked to the shank of the outer jaw at its point of contact.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the inven tion.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the handle of the wrench, whose inner end is bifurcated or slotted as shown at 11 for the reception of the inner end of the shank 12 of the outer jaw 13, the inner end of the said shank being pivotally secured to the handle as at 14. The jaw 13 is disposed substantially at right angles to the shank and is preferably widened as shown at 15 and provided with transversely arranged teeth 16 upon its inner face so as to provide a gripping surface. The portion of the jaw carrying the gripping surfacemay be separately formed of hardened steel and secured in place as shown.
The shank 12 of the outer jaw is provided along its inner edge with an extension 16. This extension is of arcu te formation and Specification of Letters Patent. 1 31391113911 Dec, 13., 1921,
Application filed March 5, 1921.
Serial No. 449,977.
is preferably detachably secured to the shank 12 as shown at 17. This permits of the said extension being made of tool steel. to withstand wear. The outer edge of the extension is toothed as shown at 18 and this toothed portion is preferably widened to provide an increased bearing surface for en gagement with the object upon which the wrench is used.
Pivotally secured to the handle 10 is one end of a link 19, this end being pivotally mounted within the bifurcated portion of the handle as shown at 20. The opposite end of the link carries a stud'21 upon which is mounted a toothed wheel 22, the latter forming the inner movable jaw of the wrench. This wheel is held in engagement with the teeth 18, through the medium of links 23. One end of these links is perforated to receive the stud 21, while their opposite ends are pivotally mounted as shown at 24 upon the shank 12, concentrically with the extension .16. A movement of the jaw 13 will thus impart movement to the jaw 22 through the engagement of the teeth of this jaw with the teeth 18.
By the arrangement shown, the links 19 impart a swinging-action to the jaws through the engagement of the toothed wheel which forms the inner jaw, with the teeth 18. This provides a positive grip upon an object, the same gripping power being exercised, irrespective of the size of the object. In addition to imparting a rotary movement to the wheel 28, the teeth 18 act to provide an ad ditional gripping surface.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. A wrench comprising a handle, an outer jaw, a toothed shank pivotally connecting the outer jaw withthe handle, a rotatable toothed jaw engaging the teeth of the shank, means for holding the teeth in engagement and a link pivotally connecting the rotatable j aw. with the handle, whereby the latter may be moved longitudinally of the shank.
2. A wrench comprising a handle, an outer jaw, a shank pivotally connecting the outer jaw with the handle, a rotatable jaw, means pivotally connecting the rotatable jaw with the handle, a curved extension provlded on the shank of the outer jaw and engage'a-ble by the rotatable jaw and means pivoted to the shank of the outer "jaw concentrically of the curved extension to hold the rotatable jaw in contacting engagement. 7
3. Awrench comprising a handle, an outer jaw, ashank pivotally connecting the outer jaw to the handle, alink having one end pivotally secured to the handle, links connecting the opposite end of the first mentionedlink with the shank of the outer jaw, a rotatable member mounted at the point of connection of the links and defining an inner jaw and means carried by the shank of the outer jaw and engageable with the inner jaw for adjusting the relative position of the jaws by a pivotal movement of the handle.
, 4. A wrench comprising a handle, an outer jaw, a shank pivotally connecting the outer jaw to the handle a link having one end pivotally secured to the handle, links connecting the opposite end of the first mentioned link withthe shank of the outer jaw, a rotatable toothed member mounted at the point of connection of the links and defining an inner jaw and a curved toothed eX- tension carried'by the shank of the'outer jaw and engageable with the inner jaw for adjusting the relative position of-the jaws by a pivotal movement of the handle.
In testimonywhereof I affix my signature.
