ATTURNEYS Patented Jan. 11, 1927.
UNITED STATES GEOQGE S. AINSLEY, F INDIANAPOLIS, IDIANA.
ADJUSTABLE WRENCH.
Application filed November 12, 1926. Serial No. 147,912.
Hy invention relates to improvements in wrenches and more particularly to pipe wrenches.
lt is one of the objects of my invention to provide a quick acting wrench which will powerfully grip the pipe and which may be cheaply manufactured. f
For the purpose of disclosing my invention I have illustrated oney embodiment thereof inV the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a wrench embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, showing the jaws closed, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In the embodiment illustrated the handle l is provided at its upper end with a gear face 2 and opposite said gear with an extension 3 terminating in spaced apart ears 4l. rl`he upper jaw 5 of the wrench is provided with an elongated arcuate shank 6 having a reduced portion 7 fit-ting between the ears 4 and pivotally connected thereto by the pivot pin 8. wrench is provided with a shank lO having a rack 1l adapted to mesh with the gear 2. A strap l2 embraces both jaws and is pivoted to the hanjdle l by the pivot pin 13.
The operation of the wrench is obvious. lith the parts in the position illustrated in Fig. l the wrench is applied to the object to be turned. Pressure applied to the handle l towards the left, loo-king at Fig. l, will rock the handle on the pivot 13 causing the rack 2 to run the jaw 9 upwardly, the shank l() sliding between the sides of the strap and being held to the gear 2 by the end of the y strap. The same movement will rock the extension and ears 4 downwardly thereby drawing the upper jaw toward the lower jaw The lo-wer jaw 9 of the.-
and the end ofthe strap engaging the back of the shank 6 will hold the jaw to the work.
I claim as my invention: 4:5
l. A wrench comprising a handle having at its upper end a gear and an offset portion opposite said gear, a lower jaw having a shank provided on its inner face with a rack engaging' said gear and an upper aw having Y 50 a shank pivotally connected at its lower end to said offset. and means for holdingthe rack of the first aw in engagement with the gear.
2. A wrench comprising a handle having a gear at its upper end and an offset extending opposite to said gear, a lower jaw having a shank provided with arack engaging said gear', an upper jaw having a shank pivotally connected to said oiset and a strap embracing the shank of the lower jaw and pivot- V ally connected to said handle.
3. A wrench comprising a handle having at its upper end a gear and an offset member opposite said gear, a lower jaw having a shank provided with a rack meshing with said gear, an upper jaw having a shank pivotally connected at its lower endto said olfset and a strap embracing said jaws and pivotally connected to the handle.
4. A wrench comprising a handle having at its upper end a gear and an otl'set opposite said gear, a lower jaw having a shank provided with a rackl meshing with said gear, an upper aw having a shank pivotally connected with said offset, the back of vsaid shank being arcuate and a strap embracing said Shanks and pivotally connected to the handle.
In witness `whereof I, GEORGE S. AINsLnY, have hereunto set my hand at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 10th day of November, A. D.y one thousand nine hundred and twenty-six.
Gnonen s. AINsLEY.
