WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented July *7, 1914.
Application filed October 16, 1913. Serial No. 795,446.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT STENSLAND, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at VVorthing, in the county of Lincoln and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved wrench intended" for general use, and to this end, it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved wrench, some parts being broken away, showing the exposed parts in section; Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 00 m of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 00 m of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line m m of Fig. 3.
The numeral 1 indicates a pair of clamping jaws mounted on a yoke support 2 for parallel lateral movements toward and from each other. At their inner ends, these aws are provided with transverse alining perforations 3, through which projects the transverse portion of the yoke support 2, which is round in cross section.
An operating screw rod 4 is provided for moving the jaws 1 toward and from each other on the transverse portion of the support 2. The ends of this operatingscrew rod 4 are loosely journaled in the prongs of the support 2 and said screw rod is provided with right and left hand screw threads hav ing engagement with internally threaded transverse alining perforations 5 formed in the intermediate portions of the jaws 1. A knurled thumb piece 6 is rigidly secured to the projecting end of the screw rod 4 and is provided with a transverse perforation 7, into which may be inserted a pin or suitable tool, not shown, for rotating the screw rod 4.
Obviously, by turning the screw rod 4, the
Rotatively mounted on the transverse portion of the support 2, between the jaws, is a laterally projecting head block 8 having a stud extension 9 which projects radially from the transverse portion of the support 2. The head block 8 may be secured in different angular adjustments, with respect to the transverse portion of said support, by means of a set screw 10 having screw threaded engagement with a boss on the head block 8 and with its inner end arranged to impinge against the support 2.
An operating handle 11 is provided for turning a nut or bolt, held by the jaws 1, in the same plane with the jaws or in a plane at right angles thereto. This may be done by a complete rotation of the handle 11 or by'a ratchet-like action thereof. The hollow inner end of the handle 11 is journaled for rotation on the stud 9 and has mounted therein a ratchet wheel 12 keyed to the intermediate portion of the stud 9. Cooperating with the ratchet wheel 12 is a pair of reversely acting pawls 13 intermediately fulcrumecl to a common pivot, pin 14, extended transversely through the hollow end of the handle 11 and anchored to thewvalls thereof. The operative ends of the pawls 13 are arranged for action on the teeth of the ratchet wheel 12, and their other or short ends are connected by a coiled spring 15.
A cam blade 16 is provided for holding either one of the pawls 13 out of action with the ratchet wheel 12. This cam blade 16 is provided with oppositely extended trunnions 17 loosely journaled in the side walls of the hollow end of the handle 11, one of which terminates in a finger piece 18. The rotary movement of the finger piece 18 is limited by stop pins 19 projecting laterally from one side of the handle 11. The free end of the handle 11 is offset forward, to bring the same into a more convenient position. Access may be had to the interior of the hollow end of the handle 11 through openings normally closed by removable side plates 20.
What I claim is A wrench comprising a yoke support, a pair of opposing jaws slidably mounted on the transverse portion of said support, an
operating rod loosely ,journaled in the prongs of said support and having right and left hand screw threaded engagement With said jaws, for moving the same toward and from each other, a laterally projecting head block rotatively mounted on the trans verse portion of said support, means securing said head block in different angular adustments, With respect to said support, an
operating handle rotatively mounted on said 10 head block, and a pawl and ratchet device connecting said handle to said head block.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ALBERT STENSLAND.
