Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1997.
Application iled :February 9,1907. Serial No. 356,622.
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern: te Be it known that I, JOHN L. Sernin, a citi- .lzen of the United States, residing at Fortuna, in the county of Moniteau. and State of Missouri, have invented. a new and useful Ratchet-Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to ratchet wrenches and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a ratchet wrench which is devoid of spring actuated pawls and which may be easily and quickly adjusted 'for turning objects in either direction. The wrench is therefore substantial in its construction and avoids the use or employment oi delicate parts and l work and will retain its durability for a comparatively long period oi' time.
The wrench consists primarily of a stockl having at one end a handle grip and at its opposite end a head. A pivot is mounted upon said stock. A shaft is journaled for rotation upon the head of the stock and is rovided with a gear wheel and a noncircu ar end. A detachable socket fits over the non-circular end and is held thereon by means oi a set screw or similar securing device. A ratchet member is mounted upon the ivot of the stock and is provided at one end with a handle grip and at its other end with laterally disposed shoulders which operate as pawls for engaging the gear wheel of the shaft on either side'oi' the longitudinal axis of the stock. `The distance between the pivot upon the stock and the eriphery oi the gear Wheel is v,f reater than t e length bf the pawl member 'from the point where it is mounted upon said pivot to the end ,upon which is located the handle grip. Conso quently, the handle grip end of the ratchet member may be swung or passed between the pivot and the gear wheel in order that the ratchet end of the said member may be brought in contact with either side ci said gear Wheel. By this arrangement the wrench may be used Jfor turning objects in either direotion.
In the accompanying drawing z-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the same with parts in section, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the worlr engaging end of the wrench.
The wrench consists of the stock 1 upon one end of which is located a handle grip 2'. Said stock is provided at its other end with a head 3. The pivot pin i is attached to the stock 1 at a point between the ends thereof, Said pin is provided with a lug 5 which is disposed toward the end of the stock 1 having the head 3. The shaft 6 is journaled in the head 3 and is retained therein by the screw 7 Said shaft is provided with a gear wheel 8 and a non-circular end 9. The socket 10 is provided With an opening for the reception oi the non-circular portion 9 of the shaft 6 and is also provided with an opening in its opposite end for the reception oi a nut or tap to be turned. The said socket is retained in position upon the end 9 of the shaft 6 by a set screw 11 which passes-transversely through the socket and engages theportion 9 of the said shaft. Other suitable means may be employed for adjustably or removably attaching the socket to the shaft 6 the idea be ing that sockets having openings for the reception of nuts ol d'iii'erent sizescr shapes the shai't The pawl may be interchangeably applied to 6 in order to meet requirements,
member 12 is provided at one end with a han dle grip 13 and at its-opposite end with the laterally disposed shoulders 14, 14 which constitute pawls and which are adapted to enu gage the gear wheel at either side of the longi tudinal axis of the stocli 1. The pawl mem ber 12 is provided with a perforation 15 which receives the pivot 4 and said perforation i5 is provided in its side with a recess 1G through which the lug 5 passes when the pawl member 12 is mounted upon the stock 1. The re cess 16 is disposed toward the end ci the memi ber 12 which is provided with'the h andle grip i3 and consequently extends in a direction substantially opposite to 'the lug' when either one of the shoulda ment with the gear wheei 8. .ds the distance `from the pivot et to the wheei 8 is greater th an the distance from the perforation 15 to the end of the member 2, having the handle grip 13 the said end of the member 12 may be swunv1 between the pivot 4 and the gear wheel 8 so tnat either one of the shoulders 14 may be brought into engagement with the said :e is in engage- TOO pawls may be so moved as to prevent the r0- l e handle stock, u ratchet socket member jourtation ofthe gear Wheel S in one dneetion but l l neled lor rotation et the opposite end ol' the Stock, L pewl member detuelntbly jonrnuled upon the pivot pin und lyingr in :L plane purallel with the stock and having et one end :L handle grip :1nd at its opposite endJ laterallyr disposed shoulders separated by :1n intervenin proj eetion.
n testimonyY that l claim the foregoing :1s my own, l have hereto al'lixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.

permit its rotation in the opposite direction. Furthermore, in order to apply or remove the member 12 from the pivot el the handle end of the said member is brought into :Llinement with the stool; l and'lies between the pivot #L and the gear Wheel 8 when the seid member 12 may be readily lil'ted o'll' of the pivot 4 the lug 5 thereof passing through the recess 16 of the perforation l5.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is A Wrench comprising e stock having at en intermediate point a pivot pin and et one end Witnesses:
