Description
ROBERT MORRISON,
OFNRW YORK, N. Y.
Letters .Patent No. 98,515, dated January. 4, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT WRECHES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part Of thealnme.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, ROBERT MORRISON, of the city, county, and State of` New York, have invented acertain new and useful Adjustable Pipe-Wrench.
My invention relates to the novel combination and use of a compression-cam attached to the handle, and
an extension-screw, bylmeans of which a proper bearing-connection may readily lbe maintained between the cam and the jaws ofthe wrench; and I do hereby de- -clare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings furnished, and forming a part of the same, is a true, clear, and exact description thereof.
Reference beinghad to the dmwings" Figure 1 represents, in side view, one of my iluproved wrenches. l
A represents the compression-cam. It is attached to a metallic shank, which passes longitudinally through, and forms, iii-fact, a part of the handle.
B represents the connecting-pin, which unites the handle of the wrench to the slide-bar. The cam A is slotted toreceive a tenon on the slide-bar, and the pin B is fitted `closelyto the shank and loosely to the tenon, so as to admit of a free swinging movement.,
O is the slide-bar, to which the stationary or outer jaw is attached, or of which it may be a part.
D is the movable jaw, fitted to s lide uponthe bar C. E is the cam-block, titted,`like D, toslide upon the bar.
F is a double-threaded screw, tappedmiilhl; andrannnecting the cam-block E to jaw D, and-is sp larranged that by turning the screw, these two parts .aremoved to or from each other.
Figure 2 represents the same as fig. 1, top view.
Figure Brepreseuts the jaws ofthe wrench, with a l block, G, inserted, so as to adapt it to ordinary uses.
This block may be secured iu position in'auy wellknown manner, or the stationary jaw attached to the shank may be made with a square face, as myimprovement, while more especially vadapted to .pipe wrenches, is also applicable vto other kinds.
The operation of mywrench is obvious. By turning the screw, the jaws may be made to properly engage with the pipe. By turning the wrench, the l,earn is brought to bear up'ou the cam-block, the requisite degree of compression is produced.
Having thus described my invention,v
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- O -The improved adjustable wrench herein described,
provided witha cam-block and' movable jaw, connected .and Vadjusted by the screw F, and arranged to oper.' .te in combination with a cam and slide-bar, substantially as described. ROBERT MORRISON.
