SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 630,421, dated August 8, 1899.

To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. STEW- ART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Goldwater, in the county of Branch and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in wrenches.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of wrenches and to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive nut-wrenchin which the movable jaw may be readily placed contiguous to the nut or other object to be clamped and quickly adjusted to exert the desiredpressure on such object.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a wrench constructed in ac-' cordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view illustrating the manner of connecting the thumb-piece or head of the adj listing-screw to the body portion thereof. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view illustrating a modification of the invention.

The shank is provided at its front edge with shouldered teeth 6, adapted to be engaged by a dog 7, which is housed within a casing or extension 8 of the movable jaw, and thelatter, which is provided withan opening for the passage of the shank 3, has the same enlarged toward its movement transversely of the shank, and the teeth 6 and 9 are retained in engagement with each other by means of a coiled spring 10, lo-
cated at the inner end of the movable jaw and interposed between the back of the same and the rear-face of the'shank'. The back of the sliding jaw is provided with a recess, forming a seat for the coiled spring 10, and by compressing the latter the dog may be readily disengaged from the shank, and the sliding jaw can then move freely on the latter to bring it adjacent to or carry it away from an object and to enable it to be quickly adjusted approximately to such object. The back portion of the sliding jaw is recessed between the ends, as shown at 11, to lighten the construction.
The sliding movement of the jaw 2 on the shank permits the jaws to be arranged close to the opposite sides of a nut or other object, and when the teeth 6 and 9 are engaged with each other the sliding jaw drops back slightly. By arranging the dog between the shoulder 17 and thesleeve a swivel connection between it and the screw is provided. The casing is provided with a transverse fastening device 24, consisting of a rivet or the like and passing through the space between the dog and thehead or thumbpiece 20. The movable jaw and the casing may be constructed of a single piece of metal, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, ,or those parts can be made in separate pieces and suitably secured together, if desired.
In Fig. 4. of the accompanying drawings is illustrated 'a modification of the invention in which the adjusting-screw is swiveled to the sliding jaw and engages screw-threads of the dog, the screw-threads 26 of the adj usting-screw being located between the, ends thereof, as shown. The inner or rear end of the screw is. provided with ahead or thumb- .piece, as before described, and the forward or inner end of the screw is provided with a smooth bearing portion or head 27, arranged in a bearing-socket 2.8 and retained therein by a screw 29, mounted on the sliding-jaw, as shown, and engaging an annular recess cut in the screw adjacent to the head or bearing portion. 27. In order to reduce thefriction to a minimum, an antifriction-ball 30 is interposed between the end of the screw and the end. of the socket. 28. By rotating the adj usting-screw 25. the sliding jaw may be advanced independently-of the dog for thepurpose before explained.
The invention has the following advantages: The wrench is simple, inexpensive,
strong, and durable and is adapted to have its sliding jaw quickly moved along the shank to bring it adjacent to the nut or other Obi ject to be clamped, and the screw will permit the sliding jaw to be furtheradjusted to secure the necessary pressure. is housed within the casing of the movable jaw, and the parts are compactly. arranged and not liable to get out of order.
Changes in the form,.proportion, and minor details of construction, such as varying the arrangement of the adj usting-screw andomitting the ball shown. in the modification, may be resorted to without departing from the spiritor sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
