SFECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,759, dated November 22, 1892. Application filed April 6,1892. Serial No.428,036. (No model.)

Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. BROOKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Wrench and Screw-Driver; and Ido hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in a combined wrench and screw-driver, its object being to providea neat, simple, and efficient combination device for use for various purposes, but more especially useful with bicycles and the invention consists, essentially, in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure l is a plan view of my improved combination wrench and screw-driver, the jaws being closed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is apartial longitudinal section and a partial elevational View of Vthe device, the section being taken at right angles to the section of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section showing certain moditi` cations. Fig. 5 is a detail plan of the separable screw-threaded shank belonging to the movable jaw.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the different figures of the drawings.
A denotes the hollow wrench-stock or handle-piece and rigid jaw combined. It is of a flattened elongated form. It may be made in any preferable and desirable manner, being either cast or made of hard sheet metal. Its form and size may vary within considerable limits.
B designates the rigid jaw proper, which is formed as a part of the handle-piece.
The movable jaw D, which is parallel to the rigid jaw B and is adjustable away from or toward the latter to permit the use of the device with nuts of varying sizes, is preferably formed on one end with a hammer end d, and this jaw D is made integral with its sliding shank C, which lies within the handlepiece A and conforms to the internal dimensions thereof, being designed to reciprocate back and forth therein in order to accomplish the adjustment of the movable jaw relatively to the position of the rigid jaw. The sliding shank C is provided at its inner end with a screw-threaded-shank C,whereon isa knurled or milled adjusting-nut E, provided with the encircling groove e, which nut is located in a transverse opening in the handle-piece Av at a point about midway the length thereof. It will be evident that by rotating the adjustingnut E within its recess the screw which isin engagement therewith will be fed forward, and the movable jaw consequently adjusted in one direction or the other, as may be desired. 1
On the innerside of the casing A are formed lugs or projections a @,which enter thegroove e in the adj usting-nut, and thereby provide supports for said nuts, so that when strain is thrown upon the adjusting-screw the nut will be held rmly, and therebjT the jaws will not be deected from their normal parallelism suticiently to destroy the effect of their grip upon the Object between them.
The end of the handle-piece A opposite to that which carries the fixed jaw B is provided with a slot k of suitable size to permit the projection therethrough of a screw-driver bit, which is adapted to be located insideof the casing A when it is not needed for use.
F designates the screw-driver. It is formed on its inner end witha screw-threaded shank F, on which is a knurled or milled adjusting-nut G, similar in general purpose and function to that of the adj usting-nut E, said nut G being located likewise in a transverse opening in the handle-piece A at a point a short distance from the end wherein is the slot k. It will be evident that by rotating the adjusting-nut G within its recess the screw which is in engagement therewith will be fed forward and the screw-driver bit consequently projected from or retracted within the end of the main casing. The ends of the screws C and F are in contact with each other when the screw-driver is located in its innermost position in the casing, as shown in Figs. 2 and IOO In this way I provide a neat, simple, and efy iicient tool which will be found to have numerous advantages and eXcellencies in actual use. Many changes may be made in the exact construction and precise arrangement of the parts without going outsde'of the invention.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown a modification in the construction of certain parts of' my improved combined wrench and screwdriver. It will be seen in these figures that instead of having the screw-threaded shank O integral with the sliding shank C' of the movable jaw D, as it is shown in Fig. 2, I make said screw-threaded shank C separate from the sliding shank C. The purpose of lmaking it separate in this manner is because it is easier to make, the process of manufacturing being simpler. In Fig. 4 it will be seen that the shank C is provided at its inner end with a T-shaped slot, which receives a T- shaped head C2, formed on the end ofthe screw C. Thus the screw and shank are firmly and 'easily connected together. It will be found in actual practice that this separate manufacture of these two parts is a desideratum. Likewise it will-be seen in Figs. 4 and'5 that instead of having the screw-driver F made in-v tegral with its screw-threaded shank F, as it. is in Fig. 2,'I make the two parts separate.` This is done for the purpose of ease and simplicity in the manufacture,justas in thecase of the movable jaw-shank. It will be seen that `the screw-driver F is provided at its inner end f with a T-shaped slot, which receives a T-k shaped head F2 on the end of the screw- .threaded shank F', so that in this way the screw F and the4 screw-driver F are tightly and firmly fastened together. When the screw-driver is made in this way, it will be manifest that should the screw-driver break oft` its corner in use the part F can be de tached from the screw F vand a new part F supplied, so that the necessity of making' a new screw would be obviated and the eX- pense thereof avoided.
Having thus described my invention, what,
handle-piece, said nut being provided with an encircling groove, which is engaged by lugs -or projections on the inside of the handlepiece A, the vscrew-driver F, having the screwthreaded shank F', and the adj ust-ing-nut G, located on said screw-threaded shank, with a transverse opening inthe handle-piece, sub.- stantially as described.
2. In a combined wrench and screw-driver, the combination of the main wrench-stock or handle-piece A, having formed therewith-fthe `fixed jaw B, the movable jaw D, havinga slide C located within the handle-piece, on the inner end of which slide is a screw-threaded shank C', an adjusting-nut E on said screwthreaded shank and located within a transverse slot in the main casing, said-screwthreaded shank being provided with' a' T- shaped head C2, which enters aT-shaped slot in the end of the slide C in order that they may be detachably connected with each other, a screw-driver F, movable through a slot-in the end of the casing opposite tothe fixed jaw, said screw-driver'heing provided at its inner end with a T-shaped slot, a screw.-
threaded shank F', having a T-shaped head 1...
F2, which enters said slot in order thatthe shank and screw-driver may be detachably connected together, and an adjusting-nut on the said screw-threaded shank, located within a transverse opening in the main casing.
