Specification of Letters Patent- Patented Sept. 17, 1907.
Application filed August 30,1905. Serial No. 276,455-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn B. PLATT, a citizen of the United States of America, and a'resident 0f Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screw- Threading Plates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plates for cutting screwthreads on pipes, having for its objects to improve the construction, to facilitate their operations, and to simplify and facilitate the removal of parts for repairs &c.
The invention consists in the new constructions and combinations of parts, substantially as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Sheet 1. Figure l is a top or face view of my new screw-thread cutting plate, showing the cutting dies and a cut off blade.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with top plate removed to show the dies and the die holder. Fig. 3 is detached view of one of the dies. Fig. 4 is a view of the die in detail. Sheet 2. Fig. 5 is an under side view of the top plate, showing the cam grooves for adjusting the dies. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of the whole device. Fig. 7 is an end view showing a ratchet and pawl arrangement for operating the device. Sheet 3. Fig. 8 is a view of the reverse side from Fig. 1. Fig. 9 is a cross section through the dies, of the device.
A is the body of the implement, having a circular chamber with a cross groove formed by walls a a, with a central opening a. B B are the screw cutting dies which are fitted to lie in said grooves 11 a. The dies, which are the principal feature of this invention, consist of two or more parts, as l 2 3, and a head block 4, the two outside parts constituting the cutting dies, the intermediate part serving to hold the other two apart. The dies may be made with any number of parts to adapt them to out various sizes of pipes. The dies have rabbeted lugs 1 2 .3 and the head block 4 has a rabbeted lip 4 which receives the lugs of the dies, as seen in Fig. 3. The side of the head block is made slanting, and each block is provided with a pin or lug c, which plays in the curved grooves d d in the top plate.
D is a top or cover plate held on the body A by a rabbeted ring E, secured to the walls a a by screws 3 s. In the inside face of plate D are provided cam grooves d d, which lie over the pins 0 c on the die heads 0 O, by means of which the dies are moved in or outward by the turning of plate D on the ring E.
F F are bolts which project through curved slots ff in the flange Z, in body A and are screwed up into taper headed nuts h h in the top plate D. These bolts help to hold the top plate down, and as the walls a a are a trifle lower than the dies, the dies are clamped more firmly in place. To withdraw the dies, the screws s s and bolts F F are loosened up then the top plate D is turned around to the limit of the slots ff after which the dies may be withdrawn as the pins 0 a can pass out through the straight arms of the grooves d d.
G is a cut off blade inserted in a slot in the body A and supported on an arm g on the side of the body, the point of the blade is pointed directly to the center of the opening in the body A. For adjusting said blade a sliding head is fixed on the end of said arm 9 to which the said blade is attached. A thumb screw I is placed in the end of the arm g by which the blade may be adjusted for cutting the pipe. An adjustable plate 7c is fixed on the under side of the leaf of body A having projecting points which act as a limit for the turning of top plate D.
.T is a sleeve inserted in the neck of the body through which the pipe to be threaded is placed. It is provided with a pin j on one side which is passed up in aslot and turned to one side to engage in an opening j provided therefor in body A to retain it in place. It has ball bearings in the head for relieving the friction on the pipe when the work is being performed. This. description is in the instance where the device has the levers attached to the body for turning it.
In Fig. 6 is shown another method of operating the device, which consists of a sleeve L placed on the neck A in which is provided a ratchet and pawls by means of which the body is made to turn for performing its work. A lever is put into a socket Q on the ring of said .sleeve L. There are two pawls placed in opposition to each other, to provide a means for turning the device in opposite directions whereby the device can be made to cut right or left hand screw threads. Small springs t t are placed in recesses over the pawls for insuring their operating. Headed screws 1) are put up through the springs and out through the openings in the wall of the ring, the screws having thumb nuts on the outside the purpose of which are to hold the pawls up and thus disengage either one or the other of said pawls when not needed for use.
Having described my invention what I claim is:
1. In combination with a body having a central opening, dies seating on said body and projecting in said open ing, each die comprising a series of longitudinal members in side by side relation, a head block disposed transverse each member oppositely related to said lip of the head I members being oppositely related, a pin on said head 10 block and each interfitting with said lip of the head block, a top plate, and means on said head block engaging said top plate to operate the dies. ,7, V
3. In combination with a body, dies engaging thereon, each die being composed of longitudinal members and a head block disposed transverse of the length of said members, said head block and members being formed with interlocking connections, the connections of the head and block, a top plate, and means on the top plate to engage said pin and thereby operate said head block.
