DIE-STOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1,1916.
Application filed April 8, 1914,:Seria1 No. 830,522. .Renewed October 27, 1915. Serial No. 58,302.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JoHANN FRIEDRICH HoLzsoHErrEn, mechanical engineer, a citi- Zen of the Swiss Confederation, residing at Manessestrasse No. 190, Zurich, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Die-Stocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention relates to adjustable screw thread cutting means and particularly to stock or die heads in which the dies are mounted in contact with each other and formed with co-acting surfaces so inclined that lateral pressure applied to one of the dies produces a corresponding movement of the other dies toward or away from a common center.
The object of the invention is to provide simple and eflicient means for quickly releasing the dies from the work as soon as the desired extent of thread cutting has been accomplished without injury to the dies.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device by means of which the dies may be set accurately by means of an ad justing screw.
With these and other objects in view the accompanying drawing illustrates one form of device for carrying out the invention wherein:
Figure 1 illustrates the stock in a section on line AB of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front view of the stock. Fig. 3 shows the dies and the ring operating said dies. Fig. 4 shows a similar view the dies being shown displaced. Fig. 5 shows a die in a perspective view.
Referring to the drawings 1 is the body of the stock having a square opening 2 in which are four dies 3 slidable on one another and in the opening. In the body 1 there is a fiat ring 4 rotatably mounted which is provided with teeth 5 projecting inwardly. Each of the teeth 5 protrudes in recesses 6, 7 of two contiguous dies 3. The flanks of each tooth 5 are in contact with the faces 8, 9 of two consecutive dies 3 in such a manner that by rotating the ring 4 the teeth 5 move all the dies 3 to or from the common centeror-to or from the :work to be threaded. The ring 4 and the dies 3 are held in the stock 1 by means of two plates 12 and 20 secured to said stock 1. The ring 4 is provided with a bolt 10 protruding through a circular slot 11 of plate 12. On plate 12 there is fixed a sleeve 19 forming a guide for the stock and on said sleeve 19 there is rotatably mounted a ring 13 ending in a pointer. The ring 13 is fixed to the bolt 10. By rotating ring 13 ring 4 is also rotated and the dies 3 displaced. To rotate ring 13 I provide an arm 14 which is hinged at 21 to the ring 13. The arm 14 is provided with a slot 15 into which projects a pin 16 of a nut 17. The nut 17 is movable between guides 22 of the plate 12 and may be moved by a screwthreaded spindle 1S, axially stationary, mounted on the plate 12. The spindle 18 is provided with a square head and may be rotated by means of a key. If the spindle 18 is rotated the nut 17 is moved between the guides 22 and the arm 14 is rotated around the sleeve 19 taking with it the rings 13 and 4. By these means the dies 3 may be set exactly as desired and this position may be read off from a scale on the plate 12 over which the pointer on ring 13 swings. To release the dies 3 quickly after a. predetermined amount of screw cutting has been accomplished the arm 14 is brought out of engagement with the nut 17 and the ring 13 may be freely rotated and the dies 3 brought out of the threads cut into the work.
The main and principal idea of my invention may without departing from the scope thereof be applied to stocks which are not rigidly fixed to handles but which may be rotated by a ratchet mechanism or the like; and I do not limit myself to any particular form thereof; but
What I claim and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. The combination with a die-stock of a ring rotatably mounted in said stock, dies also mounted in said stock and arranged in contact with each other and formed with co-acting surfaces so inclined that lateral pressure applied to one of the dies produces a corresponding movement of the other dies toward or away from the center of said ring rotatably mounted in said stock engaging said dies, a lever connected with said ring, a nut and spindle arrangement adapted to rotate said lever, and means to disengage said lever from said nut. V
2. A thread cutting device comprising in combination a stock, a plurality of dies mounted therein, a ring arranged to adjust said dies, a lever pivotally connected to said ring provided With a longitudnal slot therein, a straight threaded bolt or spindle rotatably mounted on said stock, and a nut mounted on said spindle having a projec- 10 tion for engaging said slotuto move said lever positively or to lock the same.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signalever positively or to lock the same.
