DIE-STOCK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLns T. Benson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful improvements in Die-Stocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to die stocks more particularly those adapted to cut taper threads, and the object of the invention is to provide positive acting and quickly adjustable means for cutting the thread and producing the taper therein.
1 accomplish my object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a die stock combining my invention. Fig. 2 is a face view thereof, some of the parts being partially broken away to reveal the inner mechanism. Fig. 8 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 3--3, Fig. 2. Fig. t is a perspective showing the controlling rod and sleeve, and Fig. 5 is a perspective of the rider which attaches adjustably to the cam plate.
Similar reference characters denote like parts in the different views.
The stock body 1 is provided with handles 2 and an externally threaded sleeve 3 adapted to cooperate with the internally threaded leader bushing or work holder 41 in the usual manner. The dies or chaser-s 5 are arranged radially and equidistantly in the stock body, and are radially movable therein.
In the form selected to illustrate the invention the chasers are provided with antifriction rollers 8 on their sides, which rollers work in cam slots 9 formed in the rotatable cam plate 10. The construction is such that when said cam plate is rotated relatively to the stock body, the chasers will mutually approach or recede. plate is rotatably held in position on the stock body by a flanged ring 11, screwed or otherwise fastened to said stock body. The cam plate is rotated through the agency of. a rider 12 shown separately in Fig. 5. in the form shown said rider is adjustably secured t0 the cam plate by wing nuts 18 in the manner shown in detail in Fig. 8. Said rider is apertured near its ends to take the screws 14:, which have heads 15 adapted to Specification of Letters Patent.

travel in the circular groove 16 in the face of the cam plate. Above said groove are formed inwardly projecting lips or flanges 17 which serve to engage head 15 and clamp the cam plate and rider together when the nuts 13 are tightened. By preference, said rider has a circular rib 20 on the underside adapted to be engaged by the flanges 17 to cooperate in holding the parts concentric with each other.
The means for rotating the cam plate and rider are shown in perspective in Figs. at and The plate 25 is screwed. or otherwise rigidly fastened to the rider 12 and is provided with a finger 4.16 adapted to be engaged between the fingers 27 on the plate 28 screwed or otherwise rigidly fastened to the head 29 of the sleeve 30, which has a bearing in a bushing 81 mounted in the stock body, as best shown in the upper left hand corner of Fig. 1. Sleeve 30 has a cam slot 32 adapted to receive a pin 33 projecting from the controlling rod 3% which is pinned orotherwise rigidly fastened to a boss 35 formed upon the controlling ring 36. Said ring is freely rotatable upon work holder 4L and is prevented from moving longitudinally of said holder by an annular keeper 37 screwing onto said holder. A second boss 10 is also formed. upon said ring 36 and has rigidly fastened thereto a guide rod 41, which slides longitudinally in bushing 42 mounted in the stock body, as best shown in the lower portion of Fig. 1.
From the foregoing it will be evident that when the work holder is fastened to the work and the stock body is rotated, rods 34 and 41. will cause ring 36 to rotate in unison with the stock body, but will permit the stock body to move toward and from said ring. The motion of the stock body toward and from the ring will be caused by the cooperation of the interfitting threads of the stock body and the work holder. It will also be clear that the motion of the stock body toward. and from ring 36 will cause controlling rod 34: to slide longitudinally in the sleeve 30 and thus cause the pin 33 to travel in the eccentric cam slot 32. thereby producing a rotary movement of the sleeve 30 about its own axis. This produces a con responding rotary movement of plate 28 which. is transmitted to the rider by reason of the interlocking engagement of the finger 26 with the fingers 37. The rider, being clamped to the cam plate 10, causes the latter to rotate relatively to the stock body and thus moves the chasers radially inwardly or outwardly. The eccentricity of the cams in the cam plate is so arranged that the chasers will move gradually outward as the stock body approaches the work holder, thus producing the required taper in the thread formed on the work.
I Vhen it is desired to adjust the chasers to accommodate work of a different size, the wing nuts 13 are loosened and this permits the cam plate to be rotated independently of the rider. The operator may then rotate the cam plate and move the chasers radially inwardly or outwardly as the case may require. Nhen adjusted, the wing nuts are again tightened, whereupon the cam plate can be moved only by moving the rider through the agency of the interlocking fingers as described. It will be noted that with my device adjustment of the chasers is a very simple matter, the wing nuts being on the face of the tool where they are readily accessible and are operable by hand. No monkey wrench or other tool is necessary, and furthermore, when the said nuts are loosened the cam plate may be swung directly by hand to the desired position, it being quite tree to rotate when not clamped to the rider. Adjustment from one size of work to another is, therefore, a matter of only a second or two and may be accomplished without the aid of wrenches or tools of any kind.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a die stock, the combination of a work holder, a stock body having screw connection therewith, chasers radially movable in said stock body, a cam plate rotatable relatively to the stock body and adapted to control the chasers radially, an interfitting rod and sleeve mechanism connected to said cam plate for rotating it relatively to the stock body, said rod and sleeve mechanism comprising two cooperating parts having a cam and pin connection, and means connected to said work holder for producing relative movement between the said two cooperating parts of the rod and sleeve mechanism to thereby cause one of said two cooperating parts to operate the other.
2. In a die stock, the combination of a work holder, a stock body having screw connection therewith, chasers radially movable in said stock body, a cam plate rotatable relatively to the stock body and adapted to control the chasers radially, a sleeve connected to said cam plate for rotating it relatively to the stock body, a controlling rod having a cam and pin connection with said sleeve for operating it, and a ring mounted on said work holder for operating said controlling rod.

In a die stock, the combination of a work holder, a stock body having screw connection therewith, chasers radially movable in said stock body, a cam plate rotatable relatively to the stock body and adapted to control the chasers radially, a rider adjustably attached to said cam plate, and means for operating said rider to rotate the cam plate relatively to the stock body, said operating means comprising a ring on the work holder, and an interfitting rod and sleeve, one of which is connected to said ring and the other to said rider, said rod and sleeve having a slot and pin connection with each other.
4:. In a die stock, the combination of a work holder, a stock body having screw connection therewith, chasers radially movable in said stock body, a cam plate rotatable relatively to the stock body and adapted to control the chasers radially, a rider slidably mounted on said cam plate, means for clamping said rider to said cam plate, a rotatable sleeve connected to said rider, a controlling rod having a slot and pin connection with said sleeve, and a rotatable longitudinally fixed ring for operating said controlling rod.
5. In a die stock the combination of a work holder, a stock body having screw connection therewith, chasers radially movable in said stock body, a cam plate rotatable relatively to the stock body and adapted to control the chasers radially, said cam plate having a narrow mouth slot concentric with the work, a rider slidably mounted on said cam plate, a clamping device entering partially into said slot for holding the rider adjustably to the cam plate, a ring on the work holder, an interfitting rod and sleeve, one connected to said ring and the other to said rider, and a slot and pin connection between said rod and sleeve.

In a die stock, the combination of a work holder, a stock body having screw connection therewith, chasers radially movable in said stock body, a cam plate rotatable relatively to the stock body and adapted to control the chasers radially, a rider slidably and adjustably mounted on said cam plate, a rotatable member mounted in the stock body and arranged parallel to the aXis thereof, interfit-ting fingers connecting said rotatable member to said rider, and means for operating said rotatable member, said operating means comprising a controlling rod, a slot and pin connection between said rotatable member and said rod, and a ring on the work holder for operating said rod.
7. In a die stock, the combination of a work holder, a stock body having screw connection therewith, chasers radially movable in said stock body, a cam plate rotatable relatively to the stock body and adapted to control the chasers radially, an interfitting rod and sleeve mechanism connected to said cam plate for rotating it relatively to the stock body, said rod and sleeve mechanism comprising two cooperating parts having a cam and pin connection, and a ring for operating said rod and sleeve mechanism, said ring being rotatably mounted on said work holder and prevented from moving longitudinally thereon.
