Description

UNITEDu STATES ATENT OFFICE.
E. C. C. KELLOGG, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JAMES E. COLEMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOCKS FOR HOLDING SCREW CUTTING DIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 47,898, dated May 23, 1865.
7'0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that l, E. C. C. KELLOGG, of the city and county ot" Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stocks for Holding Screw- Cutting Dies; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact descrip` tion of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, in which y Figure l is a plan View of myimprovement. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate correspond ing parts in both figures.
The object ofthe tirstpart of this invention is to afford greaterV facility for the removal of the dies from the stock, and to enable one set oi' dies to be changed for another set of different size in amore expeditious manner than is practicable with the lmodes of securing them heretofore used 5 and to this end it consists in the employment, for securing thedies in a taper opening in the stock, of two obliquelyslotted plates, constructed an d applied as hereinafter described. Y
My invention further consists in making one of the handles ol the die stock hollow, for the purpose of receiving', when not in use, the pin-wrench or tommy 7 which is used for tightening or slacking oft' the screw which holds the dies against the rod or bolt upon which they may be operating', such wrench being provided with a male screw-thread to enable it to screw into a i'emalerscrewthread within the hollow handle-of the stock` To enable others skilled in the art to construct and operate my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.
' A is the stock, with an opening, B, taper'- ing downward, for the reception of the dies C C. Upon the upper face of this stock are the two plates D D', each made with two oblique slots, d d and d d, into which iit the stationary necks of the screws c e c c', which are screwed into the stock to hold the said plates and make them confine the dies within the opening B by lapping over the sides thereof. When pressure is applied to the ends of the said plates, which are longenough to project beyond the front and back of the stock, they move obliquelyv on the screws e c e in such manner as to carrytheir inner edges toward or from the center of the stock according to the end to which the pressure is applied, the pressure in one direction causing them to move outward to while the stock is held by both handles. Thesaid screws being so adjusted obviate the necessity of removing any portion of the stock or running back the feedscrew E farther than is sufficient to slacken the dies when it is desired to charge or remove the dies. The stock A is provided in the ordinary manner with two handles or levers,'a and a', the latter of'which has va longitudinal cylindrical cavity, b', within it for the purpose of receiving, when not in use, the pin-wrench E', by which the feed'screw E is turned, and which is provided with a male screw, e", and a milled head, 6"', the said male screw tting into the female thread eiv, cut upon the interior of the mouth of the cavity b. In this way the loss or mislaying of the wrench is prevented.
What- I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
l. The slotted plates D D' and screws c e e e', in combination with each other and with the stock and dies, substantially as and for the purpose herein speciiied.
2. The cavity bin the handle a', having a female screw-thread, ci", at its mouth, in combination with the pin-wrench E', having a male screw-thread, e', nearits head, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
