UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM J. JONES, OF MCKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
ADJUSTABLE wRENcH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,972, dated August 10, 1897.
Application led J'une l, 1897. Serial No. 639,065. (N0 mOdel.)
To @ZZ whom. t may concern:
Beit known that LWILLIAM J .J ONES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adj ustable Ratchet-lVrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in ratchet-wrenches, and has for its object to provide a wrench of this type which may be made adjustable, so as to conform to any sized nut or bolt upon which it may be desired to use the same.
The invention consists, briefly, in a die or disk having adjustable yjaws adapted to operate thereon and independent means within the die for adjusting said jaws, together with pivoted levers arranged in the handle in a manner to have one of the levers in engagement with the ratchet and the other lever out of engagement therewith, as desired; and to this end the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, and wherein like letters of reference indicate' similar parts throughout the several views,in which- Figure l is a front view of the wrench and a portion of the handle, partly broken away to show the manner in which the adjustable jaws are secured in the die, also showing the handle, partly broken away, with one of the 'ratchet-levers secured to engage the ratchet and the other released, so as to be out of engagement therewit-h. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the wrench and a portion of the handle, showing a portion of a bolt in en- Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line X X of Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a vertical sectional view of the die, taken on the line Y Y of Fig. 2, showing the jaws holding the nut or bolthead. Fig. 5 is a side view of the die with the adjustable jaw in position and the screw Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical sec- Fig. 7 is a perspective removed. j tion al view of the die.
view of one of the adjustable jaws. Fig. 8 is a plan view of one of the screws supporting said jaws. Fig. 9 is an underneath plan view of a portion otA a toothed ring employed for adjusting the jaws.
Referring now to the drawings by referenceletters, a. represents the shell, which has formed integral therewith a ratchet b. A shoulder c is formed on the back of said shell and is adapted to receive the handled, which iits over the ratchet and is provided with recessed portions e, in which is pivotally secured the ratchet-leversf, which are heldin en gage ment with the ratchet by means of springs g and abutting against the same, secured to the body portion of the handle CZ, and when desired are held out of engagement with the ratchet by means of lugs 7L, which are pivotally attached to the body portion of the handle, said lug consisting of a plate pivotally secured to the handle in any suitable manner and adapted to be rotated so as to engage the end of the lever and hold the same out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel. The said handle is heldin position by means of a collar k, which fastens by screws or other suitable means to the die Z), said collar and die being provided with a central aperture to permit the bolt or other device being held to pass through the same.
Secured to the inner face of the shell by screws or other suitable ineans is aI die Z, which is provided with cut-away portions m, in which the adjustable jaws n operate. These jaws n are provided with suitable beveled flanges o, which slide in grooves provided therefor in the die, said jaws being supported by means of screws p, the head q of which engages in the recesses provided therefor in the rim of the shell, the shank r of said screw between the head proper and the screw 1J being milled to receive the toothed ring s, which 0perates in the groove t, provided on the face of the die, and is held in position by'means of the ring u., engaging the outer face of said milled ring s and secured by screws o or other suitable means to the die or rim of the shell.
The operation of my improved adjustable wrench is as follows: Assuming that the jaws have been engaged against the head of the bolt, as is shown in Figs. 2 and 4., and it is desired to release the same, the milled ring s is IOO turned, which causes the same to engage the the adjustable jaws are moved outward sufficiently to admit the object which it is desired to clamp, when the ratchet-lever f is released from its holding-lug h, the spring g forcing the outer end of the said lever outward from the handle and the innerend of the same into engagement with the ratchet, when by giving the handle an upward and downward movement this lever engages the teeth of the ratchet to bring the jaws firmly into engagement with the object to be held an'd permitting the turning. of the same.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an adjustable Wrench, consisting of a shell having a ratchet formed integral there'- With, a handle engagingover the ratchet secured to said shell, ratchet-levers arranged in the handle to operate the ratchet, a die secured in said shell, adjustable jaws operating in said die, and means for adjusting said jaws radially within the die, substantially as shown and described.
25A ratchet-wrench consisting of a die, jaws arranged in said die, and means for adjusting said jaws, a shell surrounding the die and jaws, a ratchet formed with said shell, a handlesecuredthereto, and ratchet-levers operating in said handle to engage the ratchet.
3. A ratchet-wrench consisting of ashell,
and a die secured therein, a ratchet formed on said shell, jaws operating in saifddie, means for adjusting said j aws, and means within the handle for operating the ratchet, substantially as shown and described,
In testimony whereof I a'ix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
