WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,610, dated September 5, 1899.
Application filed March 28,1899. Serial No. 710,799. (No model.)
T0 to whom rt may concern.-
Be it known that we, DAVID K. WILHELM and SAMUEL A. LOUDER,citizens of the United States, residing at Oresson, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vrenches; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches, and particularly to a sliding-jaw wrench in which the shank portion of the jaw slides in a dovetailed recess in the fixed part of the wrench, having the integral jaw therewith, meansbeing provided to securely hold the sliding jaw in an adjusted position.
More specifically, the present invention resides in the provision of a double-ended sliding-j aw pipe and nut wrench in which the shank of the sliding jaw at each end is arrowshaped in longitudinal section and designed to slide in a similar-shaped recess in the body of the wrench, suitable set-screws being provided to hold the sliding jaws in their adj usted positions.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists, further, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
Our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form apart of this application, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is aperspective view of our wrench complete. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the shank portion of the sliding jaw and showing the recess in which said jaw slides. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the jaw, showing the manner of holding the sliding jaw in an adjusted position.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the handle of the wrench, which is made, preferably, of the shape illustrated in the drawings and has an integral jaw A at one end, forming a part of the sliding pipe-wrench, and a corresponding integral jaw A at the opposite end, forming a part of the sliding nut-wrench. At one end of said wrench the 'body portion is cut away at right angles to the face of the stationary jaw of the nut-wrench, and said body portion adjacent to the cut-away portion is recessed in the shape illustrated to receive the shank portion B, which is integral with the sliding jaw 13. The opposite end of the said handle is provided with a similar sliding jaw to that above described, and each of said sliding jaws is held in an adjusted position by means of the tightening-screw O, the shank portion of which is pivoted and works in a threaded aperture 0 in the head of the wrench, and by tightening said screw its inner end is brought into contact with the face of the shank portion of the sliding jaw and bears with sufficient pressure against said jaw to hold it in 'a fixed position.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a sliding-jaw wrench, consisting of the shank portion having a stationary head, the out line of which is on the arc of a circle, a flatshouldered portioh of said head terminating in a right-angled wall havinga series of teeth, combined with a sliding jaw having a shank portion with laterally projecting wings, adapted to slide on shoulders formed in the walls of a recess in the stationary jaw, anda tightenipgscrew designed to bear against the side of the shank of the sliding jaw, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we affix our sigmatures in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID K. WILHELM. SAMUEL A. LOUDER.
\Vitnesses JAS. A. LYNCH, J. F. LYNCH.
