SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,655, dated October 23, 1888.

To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tap or Die Stocks, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in tap or die stocks, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where Figure 1 represents a central vertical section of the device. Fig. 2 represents a hori zontal section on the line A B, shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a cross-section on the line C D, also shown in Fig. 1. Fig. i represents a side view of the nut-wrench attachment used with the tap or die stock; and Fig. 5 represents a cross-section on the line E F, shown in Fig. 4.

'made in one piece with or permanently attached to it, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
a is a detachable handle or lever, preferably provided with a screwthreaded end, of, that is screwed into a screw-threaded recess in the side of the hub a diametrically opposite to the permanent handle a, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
By the construction as above described the usefulness of the tool is increased, as it may be used with one or two handles, as circum stances may require.
The hub a is open from top to bottom, and through it is passed loosely the sleeve I), having enlarged collar 1) in its lower end, and is provided with a detachable collar, 1), in its upper end, that is secured to the sleeve b by means of a set-screw, b or equivalent device, as shown in Fig. 1, by which arrangement the sleeve 7) is so arranged relative to the hub a that it can turn freely therein in one direction, as will hereinafter be more fully de scribed. The sleeve b has two tapering recesses, 11 D of a square or polygonal form, either of which is adapted to receive one end of a tap or other tool that is to be usedin connection with the device. The hub a is provided with one or more tapering eccentric cavities, a a at, extending from top to bottom of it, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and in each such cavity is located a cylindrical metal friction-roller,c, of uniform size throughout its length, which latter is equal to the height of the said hub a, as shown in Fig. 1. Each of the said friction-rollers c is made of a diameter of such a size that it will bind and lock the sleeve b and hub a frictionally together when the handle a is turned in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2, and when said handle is turned in an opposite direction said rollers will be liberated from said hub and sleeve by reason of the eccentricity of the cavities a, thus permitting the hub a to be turned in such direction without imparting a motion to the sleeve 1) and the tap or other tool attached to it.
In each cavity a, back of the friction'roller c, is located a metal spring, 0', for the purpose of holding the roller 0 in position within its eccentric cavity, so that the slightest motion of the handle a in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2 shall cause the said roller to frictionally lock the hub a and sleeve b together.
If a boring-bit is to be used in connection with the device, I insert the square or polygonal head of such bit in one of the central tapering recesses in the sleeve 1), and in the opposite recess I insert the end of aswivelhandle, d, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
If it is desired to use the device for turning nuts, I insert in one of the recesses in the sleeve b a socket-wrench, e, as shown in Fig. 1, which wrench has a shank, 6, adapted to fit the tapering central recess in the sleeve 12, as shown in Fig. 1.
For the purpose of temporarily securing the tap, bit, or socket-wrench, &c., to the sleeve 1), I secure to its end a spring-ring, f, by means of a screw or rivet, f, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, such spring-ring being provided with a 10010 ing-pin, f, passing through a lateral perforation in the said sleeve and adapted to enter a recess in the tool to be secured to said sleeve,
as shown. .The said spring-ring is made oval or elliptical in shape, as shown in Fig. 3, and has its greatest diameter at a right angle to the locking-pin f so that by compressing said ring at its greatest diameter it will be eX- panded where the locking-pin is located, causing it to move outward, and thus liberate the 5 tool that is being held in the central recess of the sleeve b.
By making the sleeve b and its central recess of sufficient size a tapping-die may be secured to said recessed sleeve, as may be desired, if
the device is to be used as a die-stock, without departing from the essence of myinvention.
WVhen the device is to be used as a nutwrench for nuts of various sizes, I prefer to use in connection with it the adjustable wrench,
as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, in which 9 is the frame, having grooves in which the jaws g g are adjustable to and from each other by means of the right and left handed screw 9, having a thumb piece or handle, 9 in one of its ends,
the frame 9 being provided with a tapering shank, g, adapted to be inserted in any one of the tapering central recesses in the sleeve a.
Vhat I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, is
1. The tool-holding sleeve 1), having one or more recesses, bb for receiving thetool,combincd with the elongated or elliptical springring f, secured at one place to the said sleeve, and having the locking-pin f, adapted to pass through a side perforationin the sleeve, 0 and to enter a recess in the tap or other-tool to be held within said recessed sleeve, as set forth.
2. In combination with the recessed sleeve b, the nut-wrench, as described, consisting of the frame 9 and its shank 9*, the adjustable jaws g g, and right and left handed screw g, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
