AUGUST '1. PFLUGH, OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
COMBINED VISE AND THREAD-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 2, 1909.
Application filed September 21, 1905, Serial No. 279,520. Renewed October 6, 1908. Serial No. 456,364.
' citizen of the United States, residing at Hoboken, in the'county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Combined Vise and Thread-Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined vise and thread cutters.
The object of the invention is in a novel and practical manner to hold a section of pipe, bar of iron, a nipple, or other object to be threaded, positively centered relatively to a die, and to effect exact cutting of the threads. Furthermore to provide an im lement of the character defined which shal be simple in construction, portable and easy to position, and ready of manipulation.
With the above and other objects in view as will appear as the nature of the invention, is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a combined vise and thread cutter, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the, accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts: Figure 1 is a view in vertical section through a vise and thread cutter constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the device, portions thereof being broken away. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the stock, exhibiting the die combined therewith.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates the stock of the implement which is provided with a large exteriorly threaded head 2, with a reduced polygonal shank 3, with a chip way 4 extending through the head and the shank and with a die socket 5 adapted to receive a die 6 of the usual or any preferred construction.
The exterior threads of the head are engaged by an interior-1y threaded cap 7 which is provided in its upper face with a transverse seat 8 having lateral guide ways 9, and with a threaded car 10 that is engaged by a threaded revoluble vise adjusting handle 11. Mounted on the seat 8 is the vise or gripping member provided with two jaws 12 and 13, the jaw 12 being provided with lateral splines or ribs 14 to engage the guide ways 9. As clearly shown in Fig. 2, the jaw 12 is an aproximately hollow rectangular element and 1.11 the orifice 15 thus provided works the jaw 13. The opposed faces of the two jaws are serrated as usual in order to present effective gripping surfaces.
The end wall 16 of the jaw 12 is provided with a threaded opening 17 that is engaged by the reduced inner threaded terminal 18 of the handle 11, the inner end of the reduced terminal being seated in an orifice in the jaw 12, and held against disconnection therefrom by a pin 19 that engages a peripheral groove 20 in the terminal this arrangement permitting the screw freely to rotate in the jaw without becoming disconnected therefrom.
The portion of the handle 11 that engages the car 10 is threaded, the number of threads in this portion of the handle being preferably sixteen to the inch, while those on the reduced extension 18 are eight to the inch. From this arrangement, when the handle 11 is turned the jaw 13 will be moved inward by the co-action between the threads on the handle and the car, while the jaw 12 will be moved outward by means of the co-action between the threads of the reduced terminal 18 and the end wall 16, but at twice the rate of speed of movement of the aw 12, whereby the two jaws are always caused to center and thus bring the work directly over the die 6. As a means for rotating the cap 7 thus to cause the article held by the dies to approach and be operated upon by the die, the cap is provided near one end with circumferential ratchet teeth 21 that are engaged by a spring pressed pawl 22 carried by a lever 23, the latter being provided with a recess 24 for the rece tion of the pawl, and combined with the hanc le is a strap 25 which encircles the threaded portion of the cap. To causethe strap to retain its operative position relatively to the ratchet teeth 2 guide flanges 26 and 27 are provided, the former of which is preferably integral with the cap and the latter being secured thereto by screws or bolts 27 In using the implement, the cap 7 is turned until its lower extremity is nearly to the top of the upper end of the stock, and the work W is then gripped between the vise jaws with its inner end in engagement with the die. Upon vibratory motion being imparted to the lever 23, the cap will be forced down carrying with it the work, and the latter will be operated upon the die in the usual manner.
It Will be seen from the foregoing description that although the improvements herein defined are simple in character, that they Will be throughly efiective for the purposes designed, and will in a practical manner secure the objects sought.
Having thus described, the invention, what is claimed is An implement of the class described, comprisin a stock member having a chip Way therethrough, a reduced polygonal shank integral with the stock member and surrounding one end of the chip way, a die at the other end of the stock member and a cap member screwed upon the stock member, gripping elements on the cap member for centering work within the die, and means whereby rotary motion may be im arted t0 the cap member independent of t e stock member, the shank in said stock member being adapted to engage a holding device.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
