APPLICATION FILED APR 8. I9l6.

wnnnon.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Get. so, 1917..
Original application filed June 26, 1912, Serial No. 706,079. Divided and this application filed April 8,
1916. Serial 110.89 .959.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn mm, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the State of Illinois, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention .relates to wrenches in general and more particularly to wrenches havin variable 'aw 0 enin s and has speclal reference to the provision of an 1m-.
' proved wrench embodying the most valuable wise disfigure articles upon which it is used;
the provision of an improved .plier form wrench adapted for wide separation of the jaws without concurrent wide openlng of the handles and one wherein relatively slight manlpulatlon is required elther 1n moving'the article acted upon or in obtaining a fresh hold thereupon; the provision of a wrench maintained irrespective of the size of the object operated upon; the provision of a wrench wherein the number of contact points of the jaws thereof with the article operated upon may be increased and generally to provide an improved and more eflicient type of wrench than is at this time available, together with such further and additional objects as may hereinafter appear.
Certain embodiments of devices involving, in part, my present improvements, are
shown in my co-pending application for Letters Patent, Serial No. 706079, filed June 26, 1912, of which the present application is a division.
In gaining the objects above mentioned, as Well as certain benefits and advantages. to be below pointed out, I have provided the constructions illustrated in the accompany I ing ,dra wings, wherein 4 Figures 1 and 2 are-respectively a plan a shank 10 has formed atone end a handle 11 and at the opposite end a jaw 12, and that the jaw 12 is slotted as indicated at 13 to allow'the shank 14. provided with a jaw 15 to move therein and support the jaw 15 in parallelism with the jaw 12. The
a shank isprovided withtoothed means for engagement with the jaw 15, here shown as the link 16, provided with ratchet teeth 16 engaging teeth 16 on the jaw 15, the said shank 14. engaging the said link 16 by means of'a ball extension 22 engaging a socket 22 For moving said jaw 15 relatively to the jaw 12 I employ an operating lever 17 formed on the shank 14: which is pivoted to the lever 10. as indicated at 18, and as an, anti-friction device between the jaws 12 and 15 I employ a roller bearing indicated at 2 1.
For normally preventing movement of the jaw 15. relative to the link 16 and thereby lineal movement of such jaw relatively to the shank 14 and consequently separation of the jaws 12 and 15, I employa lever 78 pivoted to the handle 10 as indicated at 80,
' and engaging by means of a pin 76 a slot 7 7 formed in the link 16?, the shank 10 being slotted as indicated at 81 to permit move-- ment of said pin in the shank 10, and for normally holding the lever 78 in position and thereby the link 16 'inengagement with the toothed surface of the jaw 15, I employ a slide 79 engaging a slot 79* and acting on one surface of the end of said lever 78, a spring 82 bearing on the opposite surface thereof serving tothrow the toothed portions of the members 16 and l5jout'of en- **gagement when said slide is moved to the right in Fig. 2, thereby permitting-"adjustment of the jaw 15 relatively to the jaw 12. Topermlt a partial movement of the lever 78 suificient merely to allow aratcheting of the toothed portion of the member upon "the toothed portion or the member 16, a notch 83 is provided in the lever 78 but-it entire disengagement is desired the slide 5 should be moved to the right so that the boss 8% formed thereupon will approximate the position oi the surface 85. or such lever. A spring 86 normally serves to an in holding the link 16 in contact with the jaw and a pin 87 passing through the slot '77 serves to limit the movement or said link toward said 1' aw.
Where desirable the device of Fig. 1 may be provided with jaws having cutters as indicated at i5" 4:6, in Fig. 5, or with jaws curved or serrated, or both, as indicated at e7 L8 in (3,
From the foregoing description of the construction and operation of the present embodiment of my invention, it will be observed that the type here disclosed is provided with means whereby thejaws may be instantly opened and closed to a limited. extent for shifting relatively to the work. thereby makingit feasible to utilize notches such as 50-51 for the purpose of engaging the corners, as well as flat iacesoi nuts, giving a much firmer hold thereupon. Since the pressure applied upon closing the wrench may be very readily varied, it is obvious that the pressure applied to any nut, pipe or other object. worked upon may be gaged to suit conditions with the greatest of facility. j Other itClVfilltilP'QS-Of my present invention will be apparent to those who are skilled in the art to which it pertains.
Having thus described my illustrated its use," what I claim is new and, desire; to secure'by Letters Patent is:
relatively to the other there ot and to its lever and provided with a ratchet portion, ,55 and a] pawl for releasably engaging said ,but releasably. holding said. pawl in engagement w th said ratchet portion whereoperat verelation tel each other.
